when i tried to edit an avi in nandub or virtualdubmod everything goes fine, afterwards when i tried playing the avi with my media player i get no sound
the avi has vbr mp3, would i have to decompress the audio then rencode it?

I don't believe virtualdub, virtualdubmod and nandub support vbr audio

VirtualDubMod and Nandub both do handle VBR audio but must employ "hacks" to get VBR audio into an avi (though VDubMod has the option to handle VBR like Nandub or not). Not using the hacked technique for muxing VBR audio into avi can (and usually does) give de-synced audio. This hack is not a problem during playback and when using a more advanced container format such as ogg or matroska VirtualDubMod handles VBR very well (and without any hacks, of course).
@dead: your problem is most likely a missing decoder, yes posting gspot info could help.
