View Full Version : "2Gb (max for DVDRs)" -- why not 4.7GB?

Many of the DVDs I want to backup are multi-layer ones that have up to 9GB of data on them. I want to be able to put each DVD onto a single single-layer DVD+/-R (4.7GB max), while maintaining maximum quality.

Why does AutoGK in step 3 say "2Gb (max for DVDRs)" Can I manually override this by specifying a custom size of 4700MB (or is the right number 4300MB?) Is the reason that DVD+/-Rs have a file size limit of 2Gb? If there is a limit, is there an easy way for me to split the move into two 2GB segments (or three 1.5GB), so I can put both on a single DVD-R?

hi,
the 2GB max limit results from limitations of the avi file (and windows) - it's not limited by the DVD itself!

Anyway, if you want just one movie to be fitted on one cd, why don't you all do it in mpeg2 (instaed of mpe4). The quality will be at least equaly good - if not better since mpeg2 is optimized for higher bitrates whereas most mpeg4 codecs (among them divx and xvid) are optimized for midrange to low bitrate encodes!

So why don't you just do a dvdshrink movie only copy of your next DVD and see if you like the results! - standalone compatibility included :P

In the standard ISO mode, you cant burn files bigger than 2GB !!!

But in UDF mode, you are able to burn files bigger than 2GB... ;)

Btw, its max. 4500MB (or a bit less) !!!

It was 4480 if I remember correctly. (Once I got one MB above that and produced a coaster).

Edited: typos.

Really 4480MB ???

Nah, said 4500MB (or a bit less)... :D

Seriously, think the capacity of DVD blanks differs !!!

Some CD-R's (700MB) Ive bought had only 698MB capacity, but others 702MB...

Could be the same with DVD-R's, no ???

it differs between the two formats (+/-) a bit

from dvdrhelp.com:

DVD+R/W/DL and DVD-R/W exact sizes
DVD-R/W = 4 706 074 624 bytes ( 4488 MB )
DVD+R/W = 4 700 372 992 bytes ( 4482 MB )
DVD+R DL = 8 547 993 600 bytes ( 8152 MB )

Hate to be picky, but if 1024x 1024 = 1MB (1048576 Bytes), then:
4488 x 1MB = 4706009088 Bytes.

Hehe, so killingspree left off the very small decimal on 4488.0625MB (DVD-R) and the much more significant decimal on 4482.625MB (DVD+R).
I assume it is the number of bytes that is exact not the number of megabytes.

-this is rather picky ejones ;)

Try other recording software. 2 GB is official iso limitation and Nero donīt burn biggre files in iso mode, but WinOnCd burn it without any message and DVD is ok, I tried verification, watch movie and copy movie and no problem!
