Can I burn extra files onto a dvd such as .txt files without having any problems?

Yes, but don't put them in the AUDIO_TS or VIDEO_TS folders.
More and more commercial DVDs are including extra files like screensavers and html files.

I know this works, but what's the bottom line as far as compatability?
Will you ever run into problems putting extra files on a DVD? Is it OK to just dump a few files into the root directory of the disc? I assume this shouldn't be an issue, because DVD movies with DVD-ROM features usually have some sort of an auto-run in the root.

Be careful here. I burnt a DVD with some jpg images on there and my player decided to open them rather then the ifo. I zip the jpgs now to avoid this.
