This is such a silly question I don't even want to ask it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or inclination to read through the 43+ page DVD-RB thread, and the search function gives me too many results (and no answers).

Does DVD-RB (or is it supposed to) remove the layer break on the DVD when it rebuilds it? I've had mixed results on the DVDs I've done so far, so I figured I'd just ask.

Theoretically yes, it should remove the layer break.

Actually it does not.. since dvdrb makes an exact copy, the break comes along with it. but it really isnt necessary to remove since the origional authors of the dvd pick a spot where the pause isnt noticable anyways

Yeah for all my 4 standalones (+ the PS2) the non-removed layerbreak only causes the exact same ~250ms pause as the original disc.

But with all the crappy companies making players these days, you never know ;)

Yeah. My main set-top doesn't even flinch at the break, but the one I watch most of my movies (while the kid monopolizes the main TV) on chokes on the break every time.

If the movie is transcoded so that it fits on a DVD-5 and doesn't -need- the layer break, why not remove it alltogether? Then we'd get no stutter at all. Even a small (250ms) one.

I agree. I hope jdobbs cracks that one soon.

For now, I usually run my rips through DVD Shrink first (to remove unneeded subs and compress menu).. so it gets rid of it for me.

The problem is identifying which of what could be a list of legitimate discontinuities is the one associated with the "layer break"
