I am considering purchasing the cinema craft basic encoder to use with DVD Rebuilder (to get rid of the blue logo on the output). It has given the best results of any shrinking software I have tried.

I am also planning on buying a Dual layer DVD writer as soon as they (and the relevant media) are available.

My question is - will it be possible to recalibrate DVD rebuilder to shrink video down to dual layer dvd size?

thanks
paul

If you buy dual layer burner then why would you want to encode anything?

Maybe a DVD collection, with multiple DVD's?

Reducing file size so one can place the entire collection in 2 or 3 DVD's.

True, the need to recode will be less.

However some particularly long films (e.g. heat or home videos) could still be too big to fit on a dvd-dl.

I have a Hauppauge capture card and in order to get decent quality mpeg2 I need to capture at 7 Mbits/sec. 3 hours video will come in at about 9Gb before menus, background music etc.

I think a dual layer dvd will have about 8.5Gb storage.

Anything ON DVD, will fit on dual layer writable. Just like anything on a single layer pressed DVD fits on a DVD-R.

But like you suggested some captured video might not, but unless its a home video, it doesnt make any sense capturing a movie and storing it on a dual layer disc.

Whyever not?

How about the time you spend capturing, encoding and authoring it?

With a DL disc, you can just spin the factory DVD in the drive and get a superb quality copy, subtitles, extras; a 1:1 digital copy.

I just cant see why anybody would use DL discs for storing captures, unless they are of a more important or personal nature.

For instance, I have 5 DVD's of 911 DVB-S material captured off CNN. That kind of stuff is worth dual layer, but little other is.

ok I understand what you mean.

You are right, if I have the movie on DVD I won't be capturing anything and a straight copy will be possible.

However I will be capturing movies from sky and vhs and then transferring to dvd.

This is when I need to use dvd rebuilder. Currently DVD rebuilder automatically makes DVD single layer size files - can it be calibrated to make files to fill a DL DVD?

yes with the CCETargetSectors=x line you paste in the rebuilder.ini

rule of thumb
CCETargetSectors=~226000 will give you round about 4.37GB (real size of a dvd-5) although this value may be sailing a little too close to the wind, results vary depending on the source

so i assume doubling the value will give you the DVD-9 size

thanks

I will try this. Do I need to add the line to rebuilder.ini? It is not there at all in mine.

Hopefully not too long before rewritable dual layer media turns up.

It's added in the ini under the [options] heading.
