Hey ho chaps, Just done a back up 4 pass cce 2.67.027 sp, of Dumb and Dumber (R1) initally with half space and half d1 extras, the film came out great as per usual but the extras which contained a trailer and what i assume are stills of film photos and biographies, came out a wierd.

basically the trailer came out great and first time, the "stills" just disappeared- selecting any of the biographies kicked me out of powerdvd, i opened up the dvd in DVD-Remake to find the pgc chain corresponding to the stills all contained blocks of "no data".

but the button outlines were there but not on the frame (as the are positioned on the extremeties of the frame and the frames being "half d1"'d actually caused the buttons to be "outside the frame"

I then redid the project with just "steal 50% space from extras". Now instead of kicking me out of powerdvd i got a blankscreen- but it didn't boot me out of powerdvd

I finally managed to get it to work by replacing the blank frames using dvd remake, but i wonder how or why the still frames were removed. I'm not even sure that they were removed, as if i open the vob in say vobrator, the frames are there- they just hadn't been linked correctly- the half d1 thing i think i understand as the "button positions" hadn't been moved to account for the reduction in horizontal width (or should this be acounted for)

I'm pretty sure i did old school half d1 which also had a slideshow extra but having just scanned through the dvd file structure i think it was in a set of extras that was "below 50mb".

Also one other thing, can you have a VTS that is part half d1 and part full width? i only ask cos i tried keeping the half d1 trailer and using the original stills (as they were only about 2mb more than the half d1 versions) by merging them in vobrator, (didn't know what ammedments to make to the ifo) and when i tried to play it in powerdvd it wouldn't even load the dvd

Its not a major thing at all- after some fudging with powerdvd it works fine now- but i'm just wondering what happened

sorry if this doesn't make sense

I havent had success with DVD-RB and stills. The behavior is much like with your disc. The players hang or dont display the stills at all.

I hope jdobbs would consider just copying the stills over, or giving an option to do so. So still workability could be guaranteed for us having trouble with them.

yeah i think the issue came about due to the stills being in the same vts as the trailer which made the whole title set greater than 50mb.

just thinking aloud- is it possible to split the vts (creating a new vts that would be lower than 50mb- unless there were that many stills  )

i guess the re editing of the ifos would be more trouble than its worth?

If its in a separate VTS that isnt more than ~200MB, you can just rename each file so DVD-RB doesnt process it, but still counts its size, and then copy and rename them back in the rebuilt VIDEO_TS. I've done this on 3 discs so far with no problems.

Ok i've jsut stumbled across this problem again while trying to back up our Friends Series 7 disc 4- the offending extra is "Monica's Wedding plan" thing which is a kind of quiz where friends related questions are asked on still frames with the answer and accompanying footage in the subsequent video footage. to further add problems apart from the introductory still, every pgc in the title set sandwhiches a still between two bits of footage

the problem is rather than having the still frames (with buttons- multiple choice questions) in the VTS_02_0.vob, which RB would treat as a menu and thus leave untouched. Everything is in the VTS_02_1.vob,and being over 400mb RB is having a go at re-encoding but as with the Dumb and dumber project i had before it is actually encoding (i chose half d1 and half disk space) it, i can see the still still if i play the vob in powerdvd or media player classic but it doesn't seem like its linked correctly.

I've started to use dvd-remake (for warning/unwanted extra/menu removal after the disc id processed in dvd-rb) and was able to replace the "missing" cells (remake seemed to see the buttons, it was just that the back ground stick was blacked out/blanked) with the respective cells from the original source.

its probably a general vob question but can one vob have half d1 and "full" d1 cells in them? i only ask because the extras are now half d1, but the missing stills i need to replace with from the original vob source will be "full" d1.

are ammendments made in the ifo to indicate that the video is full or half d1?
