Hi everyone, i was just wandering how to determine if my movie is progressive, film, interlaced...
I'm from quebec and we have really, really bad dvd's here.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but with interlaced, you should see a mid frame every 4 frame or so? What about progressive?
Thanks

It's my understand and someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but DVD-RB looks in the dvd files (the ifo's??) where it says whether it's progressive or interlaced and then would apply decombi if and only if the source is interlaced to begin with. This means that if VTS 2 is interlaced and VTS 1 isn't then it would deinterlace VTS 2 leaving VTS 1 alone. Now, as to where the flags are and how to read them someone else should enlighten you... I used to use DVD2AVI and it would tell you what the source was, but I heard it wasn't always right.
That's my understanding anyway
Oh yeah, and if one of the previous posts was any indication looking at the film itself can be misleading (I'm thinking about that example with Brother Bear).

Open the .vob in DVD2AVI, choose RGB mode and scroll around, if it has combing then its interlaced and should be encoded that way.
And for PAL 25fps, if it doesnt have combing in ANY scene (scroll around through all the vobs) then its safe to encode as progressive (disable interlaced). Many PAL dvd's are encoded from progressive material as interlaced, thus without any combing.
You can also hit F5, dvd2avi then plays the video showing information on the right where it also says if its true progressive.

OK, i'm dealing with PAL but with NTSC content. Is it possible to have interlaced and progressive. I know that all Hollywood movie in the US and canada are FILM, but those quebec movie are not.
So DVD2AVI will show me if the movie is progressive, interlaced or FILM???
But if it's both progressive and interlaced?

Just for my understand, if anyone feels like explaining how DVD-RB finds out what is interlaced I'd feel better :)

oups, sorry, typo error...
I'm NOT dealing with PAL but with NTSC.
So is it possible to have a progressive and interlaced... if so, does decomb will help or will give a worst result than not using it?
