Hi there:
It may be a stupid question, but I just want to be sure before I burn a few CDs or DVDs.
I've read somewhere that when the avi file is bigger than 2 GB it is a problem to read it, if that's true, what can I do about it?
(The idea is not to cut the film...:D )
And how it is in a standalone player (Who support of course DivX or Xvid) it can have a problem too?
The whole idea is to pack 2 or may be 3 movies in one DVD, as avi files.
Greetings!

Luckily there are some stand-alone players that will support greater than 2GB encodes.
That said if you're intending to put 3 movies on one 4.7GB (4.36GB actual) disc, I doubt you'll exceed 2.0GB per movie anyway :D

Well, if you try to make an avi from "The Lord Of The Ring - The Return Of The King" then you will be over 2 GB very easily.
You said, "some" stand-alone players... good, I have to be careful... but what happen in the computer... there is no problem at all?

There's no 2GB limit on a PC.
For the latest updates of stand-alone players (incorporating MediaTek (MT) chipsets) look here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67028&perpage=20&pagenumber=12). Some players even support 'anamorphic' playback.

on FAT32 systems there is a 4GB limit though...
if you want to know what file system you are on open Windows Explorer, right click on your harddrive, choose properties and look for the file system. If you are on NTFS you're ok, if its FAT32... well, then you have a 4GB limit. (still shouldnt be a problem for 2 or 3 movies on one DVD  )

Afaik the DVD itself has a 2GB limit in ISO mode !!!
If you wanna burn larger file on a DVD, you should use UDF mode... ;)
So, next question would be:
Which players are able to read UDF system ???

So, please, before I make a back up of one film (over 2 GB, like the example above) please tell me exactly how it works!

There is no limit to how big an AVI file can be when it's burned onto a DVD~R/RW and played on an PC. But there is a limit when you spin the same DVD on an stand-alone player!
Personally I don't have problems because I don't have a stand-alone player, I have an Xcard.
That said, I'm sure I read last month in the 'hardware players' section that there is a way to spin larger than 2GB files on some players!
