Is it possible to convert an AVI with non AC3 audio into a DVD with AC3 audio? It doesn't have to be real 5.1 or anything, as long as it makes the Dolby Digital lamp light up on standalone players. I have been using DVD2SVCD and TMPGenc DVD Author to do my conversions, but get work this one out.

AFAIK not automatically. There is a manual way to keep AC3 audio if the original AVI has it, check on Q74 of the DVD2SVCD FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21859). It might work similarly in your case with some adjustments.

After encoding has finished, just manually convert the *.WAV or *.MP2 audio file to a *.AC3 file using FFMPEG with its GUI. Then use that in TMPGEnc DVD Author when authoring.
