I have had the Settings set to 4 pass, as from wat I have read in this forum that 2 pass is often not enough and 5 pass can make the quality worse.
Anyway I was woundering if anyone has any sugestions for the VBR_Bias option and the Quality_Prec option?
I have these set to default VBR=24, Quality=16. Doing test encodes can take a while so I was looking for some guidence...
Thanks a lot..
PS - Rebuilder seams to be the best app for making backups of dvds that I have come across... thanks for all your hardwork.

doing 5 or more passes wont hurt the quality at all, it will only waste time. so dont worry about that, run as many passes as you feel you need. The vbr bias should be set to 0 for the most varied bitrate... this is what I tend to use, and have had no problems with it. You may want to try out the OnePassVariable Bitrate (OPV) option. That is similar to setting the vbr bias to 0, and since it only does one pass its a lot faster. Some may argue that you get less quality this way, but the only difference in quality would prolly be the varied output size because of the chosaen q value. OPV chooses a certain quality to maintain throughout the encode (q value) and thus, has a bit of trouble getting an exact size like 4.36gb or whatever, it will usually come out to 4.xx GB. You may want to try a test with opv to see if the quality is good to your eyes.
so... to simplify the VBR bias:
This setting controls how CCE distributes the bitrate. To quote jdobbs:
"When you do your first pass the bit allocation per frame/gop is set based on a constant quality. The bias determines how much weight is given toward keeping that allocation. Setting it higher prevents wild swings in bit allocation between frames/gops. Setting it lower makes the encoder allocate more bits to high demand areas as needed and less to low demand. ...The higher you set this value, the closer you get to CBR rather than VBR."
as for the quality prec, I think staying with the default value is advised, although you can tweak it depending on how the output looks to your eyes.
Simply put:
"This setting controls whether CCE gives priority to the fine details of the image, or evenly colored flat areas. A low setting will give priority to details, but could result in blockiness or color banding. A high setting will favor flat areas, but could result in edge artifacts."
You can find the information I quoted here in the "DVD ReBuilder: Settings" sticky in this forum.
Hope this helps. :)

Thanks I, I ened up doing my tests with a 4 pass and the advanced settings all set to default and they look very good. I tested it on a 8.3GB movie file.. so it had like 47.x% compression so I think I really thrashed it (LOTR Extended edition disk 1 and 2 put ontot a single dvdr)
Have to say agai that the use of cce in this app is a great idea and i truly think this has given me the best results I have found.. thanks again guys.
After reading your post I can see wat you mean, as it was stated in the sticky, but my question was more orintated about WAT the diffrence is..
I mean VBR vs CBR?

I have just finished Spiderman Pal movie with 65% compression and with 4 passes and the quality is really great:) I did it like Jynks with default expert settings:cool:
