View Full Version : Left Over Audio & Subtitle Data

When DVD-RB removes an Audio or Sub stream it leaves the unwanted language remarks in the IFO files. This means when you use your stand alone's remote to change audio or subs you have to cycle through all the removed languages as if they are still there. I can manually zero out the streams in the VTS IFO to correct this. However, can't DVD-RB do this for me?
It seems a very simple thing to do. It was an issue that all of the lesser compression tools have had to come to terms with and resolve. I can only assume DVD-RB should solve this as well.
Also, is there no ability to choose the subs that get removed...? Or does RB just assume to remove the sub of the same language as the removed audio...?
Thanks...

Older DVDShrink used to do that too (so you'd have to flick through the original amount of subs instead of the new amount). Jdobbs is probably keeping them this way to avoid extra problems.. but since DVDShrink is the #1 for all things n00b, it shouldnt be a problem.

the newest version removes subs through use of the SETUP menu... and these settings can be saved for use on all projects, just like the language options above it in the SETUP window.
Currently it doesnt modify the information out of the ifo files, but I assume it will in a soon to be released version. I hope that when it does, that it will do so without modifying the functionality, and I think if you wanted to remove the references in the ifo, that will work for that, but you'll still need to edit the menus and remove the li nks if you want all traces of selection gone, as far as I can figure.
I use dvd-remake to blank out uneeded extras and remove/change links in the menus. and it seems to work well, and it will be great when I can avoid using DVD shrink to remove the audio/subs and have them removed completely, (I believe dvdshrink removes the association in the ifo). I'll need to check that.
so anyways, hang tight for an updated version that will do this, I'm sure it will be on the way soon enough.

I consider altering the menu my responsibilty... I will use MenuEdit for this... I don't need to use ReMake to reWRITE all data to clean up a menu where I have deleted a language... I also don't wanna run SHRINK to strip a subtitle or audio stream that's already removed by DVD-RB just because it didn't change the language number to "0" in the IFO file... I do think that if a program removes a stream it should also remove the remark from the IFO affected...
Since subtitles take so little space, the recent work jdobbs did to handle their removal is moot considering that you still have to thumb through all of the languages on screen with your remote to turn on/off the one language left... The short term fix is to just go through the VTS files and set each unwanted language to "O". There is no need to replicate a whole new set of files...
I hope jdobbs feels the same and impliments this too... It will only further complete a great program...;)

Using DVD-RB is a very long process if you use CCE, so it's not 15 minutes with DVDremake or DVDShrink that will kill you. Personaly I use both, remake for stripping unwanted video and edit menu and shrink for correctly strip language or subtitle (but subtitle unless there is 32 only take minor space, the possibility to reencode PGC under 50Mb and reencode the menu -as button over video is now possible- should be great). The whole pre-process take me less than one hour, most of the time 30 to 45 min, then I let DVD-RB all the night.
If you think it's just a matter of ifo editing, there is ifoedit... I'm impatient to try the new version on a DVD with a lot of interview in extra :)

That's not the point... There is NO NEED to waste 15 minutes & risk rewiting all the data from scratch just to change the IFO file flags... DVD-RB already strips the unwanted audio and subtitles... It just needs to finish the job and set the flags to "0" for proper set top player functionality...
As I said, for now you just need to do this in IFOEDIT... it is not a process that requires stripping again...

I do think that if a program removes a stream it should also remove the remark from the IFO affected...Audio is removed for one reason -- to get rid of unneeded languages so the additional space can be used for improved video. I do understand the problem associated with the numerous languages on DVD in Europe, and I hope to address that soon. But please remember that it was never my intention for DVD-RB to become an editing tool, it is designed primarily for full DVD backups.

I totally understand... It is not just Europe though... Most US Region 1 movies have French Audio and French and Spanish Subs... I know it's a pain... But since you took on the task of stripping the streams... I hope you decide to correct the IFOs... You can see just by these responses people are actually stripping TWICE just to get the IFOs corrected...
I am sure many more donations would fly... Ha Ha... Hell just to prove it I just sent another $10...
