i have a unicode (chinese) SRT file that I want to add in as burnt subtitles.
I've tried using VirtualDub but the words come up as jumbled letters

Do you want to make an avi or a mpeg file?
prefer mpeg, but AVI is OK, as long as it's easier.

Well, I just asume that you want to have permanent subtitles on a mpeg.
Here is a link:
Mpeg with permanent subtitles (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73181&perpage=20&pagenumber=2)
Of course you will need the program: TMPGEnc.
Greetings!
i've tried that - the subs come up all jumbled up

Well, you shoul try: Make the "Kind of avi file" whit VFAVI Converter and put your srt file with the same name into the same folder, then open that avi with the Windows Media Player and see what happen.
I've made a lot of films (AVI and MPEG) with that process and it works very good... Are you sure that your srt file is synchronized with your movie?
Greetings!
Yes, I am sure, and the subs still come up all jumbled!

What do you mean with "jumbled"?
the chinese text doesn't show up, all it does is show random english like 'd^&%$d)03'

Ah! then the problem is somewhere else, There is nothing to do with the steps to do the permanent subtitles...
Then you need some extra support for your language, I am not sure is srt format is able to do that, may be you will need to make the subs as bmp and not as text.
Sorry, I can not help you with that.
