View Full Version : DivX listed twice in GSpot
I'm really not sure if this is even the right forum for this question, and if it isn't then I apologize. I noticed today when I was using GSpot, that my DivX codec is listed twice when I open a movie. The only divx codec I have installed is the basic one from www.divx.com, yet when I open a movie with GSpot it says I have two codecs that can play the movie. When I click on the button it lists the basic DivX codec twice. I've compared the details of the two codecs, and the file names are identical, as does averything else appear to be as well. Does anyone know why it would be listing this codec twice? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

IIRC, one has DX50 as 4CC and the other has YV12 as 4CC !!!
So, maybe different decoders are used for each one... ;)

Ok, whats this 4CC...
The 4CC is simply a "4 letter info" that your system reads to choose the right decoder !!!
If a file has the 4CC "xvid" your system knows that it is a XviD file *1
So, in this case the XviD decoder would be used for decoding then *2
*1 Could be also a other MPEG4 file where the 4CC was changed to xvid...
*2 It could get also decoded by ffdshow if its configured to do this...
Hope you understand this short n' crappy explanation...
If not, post back or search around for a better one !!!
EDIT:
Here is a quote from Doom9's glossary...
FourCC stands for four character code and is a code that uniquely identifies a video data stream format. A movie player will look up the FourCC code then look for the codec associated to the FourCC code in order to play a certain video stream. A few examples: DIV3 = DivX Low-Motion, DIV4 = DivX Fast-Motion, DIVX = DivX4.

it can also be that it lists the vfw decoder and the directshow decoder
(vfw and dshow are different codec interfaces, vfw is used in virtualdub for example, directshow in the most players, like wmp9)

Yeah, thats also possible...
Check the compression menu in VDub n' see if DivX is there also listed twice !!!
If yes, click on the codecs to check their 4CC @ the right side of the menu... ;)

Nope, its not about vfw and directshow as the divxdec.ax is mentioned in GSpot in both occurances (the VFW one is also named seperately). DivX decoder filter also shows up up twice in the directshow filters list in graphedit. Something goes wrong in the registry when installing DivX, because with uninstalling, one of the two DS-filters remains in GSPot's video-codecs list as unregistered. I can delete this value with a little search in the registry and then it is gone for good. But when re-installing i get two decoder filters again... I've asked about it once at DivX-forums but got no response...
Anyway, it doesnt seem to hurt anything so I wouldnt worry too much about it. But its weird, no doubt.

But can you confirm that DivX is shown twice (with 2 different 4CC's) in VFW ???

nope, the divx.dll (VFW) is only listed once. the divxdec.ax (DS) is listed twice. it has nothing to do with fourcc's. it doesnt show up twice in virtualdub or something. (the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\drivers32 has got only one vidc entry for the divx.dll)
also read this man's post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77350)...
An example file (as reported by GSpot) is this...
4CC: DX50/divx
Name: DivX 5.0
4 Compatible Codecs Installed: ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder, DivX Decoder Filter, DivX Decoder Filter, XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder
whoopsie! two divx decoder filters again! (GSpot only list DS-filters BTW)
its a funny thing when you pay attention to it, and its weird no one ever really noticed it (well i did, but can't be bothered by it ;) )...

@stephanV
do you have any game installed that uses DIVX ? those have their own decoder that gets registered its most times in the main dir of the game maybe that is being listed :)

uhm... i hardly have any games installed...
and i can get rid of both of them and see them re-appear with with installing DivX again... the information in GSpot for both occurances is exactly the same. but after some better looking it isnt for Graphedit... still it happens with a clean install. (they both do refer to the divxdec.ax in the systems32 folder though, so its double registry setting)
I will just ask again at DivX forum... seems DigitAl is quite active this week anyway.

It seems that the problem I had is a completely different one then...
Coz my problem was that DivX was shown twice in VDub's compression menu !!!
One had DX50 as 4CC and the other one YV12...

yep ive seen that too once... there was a vidc.yv12 linked to the divx.dll in the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\drivers32
but i never got that anymore... it was in my early days (not too long ago, though :p), so it could have been caused by a co*cough*dec*cough*pack
anyway, this is not something to worry about... just annoying. but who knows, maybe they will fix it someday. ;)

Nah, Ive never installed something like a codec-pack (at least not @ this PC) !!!
I bet it has something to do with this 5.1 beta's I had installed...
No matter, after un+re-installing this problem was gone !!!
