Why will my Plextor 708 only write 1X?

When I bought the player several months ago it seemed to burn at up to 4X most of the time with DVD-R and DVD+R. I backed up a lot of photos etc. After using DVD shrink several times with DVD-R 4X I noticed it only would burn in 1x after the first few minutes. I thought maybe it had something to do with the Movies. I tried to burn some photos on a DVD+R just now and it still would burn only at 1X. All of the DVD's are rated at 4x and I have 4X selected in the Roxio Burn software.

Uh, no. You bought a DVD-/+R(W) drive for your PC, that's hardly what's meant by "Hardware players".

This forum is about standalone DVD and MPEG4 players you attach to your TV... *hint hint*

Also, having a look at the forums at http://www.rpc1.org/ might yield better results in your case than asking here anyway...
