Hi, everybody. This is just for discussion, and not for starting a war. I am deep into XviD upto my neck, but realize that there's a large number of good people in the SCVD tent.

Have any of you done a comparison sort of thing for these two formats ? The question might be put this way:

For same file-sizes, which format gives better picture-quality:-

(a) on a PC monitor,
(b) on a TV,
(c) on projection through an LCD/DLP projector ?

I am asking because:-

(a) I'd really like to know.
(b) Because I've found that XviD processing is a literally 3-clicks affair after advent of AutoGordianKnot, and gives unbelievable picture-quality on an ordinary CD-R.

Regards.

I suppose it depends on what your goal is for the finished
encode. Most standalone DVD players don't play divx or Xvid
so the fact that it fits in 700mb on a cdr is moot.

Since I don't own a dvd writer yet, I've started to used kvcd.
It's easy to fit 2+ hours on a cdr.

And the quality ? Please tell me something about the picture quality of your kvcd, comparing with mpeg-4 videos if possible. And give me a link on kvcd, if that's not too much trouble.

I'd like you to know that stanalones that play mpeg-4 are appearing in the market in slowly increasing numbers.

You can automate KVCD creation using tools like ACP or my tool DIKO (for KSVCD)

For the longest time i used mpeg4 (xvid in particular) for backups. on occasion if i tried svcd on the same backup, even using filters and cropping (like facar) the xvid version would still look better (compared 1 disk to 1 disk).. now the 2 disk svcd would look about equivelant to the 1 disk xvid (usually.) Mpeg4 has a 'look' at high compression that you see when you do one disk. you can see it if you are close to the monitor, but viewed normally the 'look' is more pleasing visually than the 'look' mpeg2 gets at low bitrates. so i saved a disk and got excellent looking backup. HOWEVER.. the problem was my player doesnt play mpeg4, and tv out wasnt really a solution for me (it tied up my pc) sooo.. i switched to svcd and just added more disks. mpeg4 standalones were just becoming available, even now they are harder to find and more expensive than dvd/svcd players (easily found under $45 usd)

I look foward to the new formats on the horizon that allow both mpeg2 & 4.. then we will have a true choice

I'm going to take a closer look at KVCD. PC playback on TV isn't a great problem for me, so I guess I'll, for the time being at least, stick to XviD.
