Hi All,

If I could do anything better, faster, smarter please don't hesitate to say.

I'm trying to burn a 8.9gb (.mpg) file to a liteOn 812S (flashed DRU-700A) burner.

I found this 3 stage process seems to be the fastest way to acheive my objective.

1. capture & edit to .mpg (8.9GB)file using Intervideo DVD Creator 2.
2. encode .mpg to dvd folders on hard disk (VIDEO_TS (.vob)) using ulead DVD workshop 2 (really quick, compared to others (onLy takes 15-20mins for 8.9gb file)
3. compress & burn (VIDEO_TS (.vob)) from hard disk to dvd disk (infosmart 4.7gb -R 4X media) using DVD shrink 3.17.6. (10mins)

Burn seems successful with no errors.

However when playback occurs, this error message below occurs ONLY at end of video around 2hrs.03mins of 2hrs.20mins. Same thing happens on both disks and both players (asus dvd rom in PC & LG DVD/VHS player on TV.

Error Code: 89020003

The DVD disc might have been damaged so as to inhibit playback operation.

Please clean the surface of the disc if possible. If it has been scratched, it might not be readable.

Disks are perfectly clean.

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers

That's a well-known problem. Many (cheap) brands of the media don't burn reliably at the edge of the disc, which is near the end of the movie. Reduce the size of the DVD Shrink output by 100Mb-200-Mb and try again. Also, whenever you have burning problems, always try using different media. RW are quite convenient for testing purposes.

Thats a good point (using RW) disk as my coffee coasters are piling up and I don't drink coffee.

Am I more likely to get success from a big brand name disk, like tdk, sony, verbatium.

DVD shrink seems to only shrink a 8.9gb movie to about 4.33gb (whic is great) but not enough in my case.

So I guess, I will have to split the movie into 2 .mpg files or is there another way doing it.

What programs are you guys using for capturing/encoding/burning...???

Thanks Again for your response.
Cheers
Tekmann.

You can change the target size in DVD Shirnk from a standard DVD to a custom value in Preferences.

The trick about choosing a DVDR brand is that the brand printed on the box usually has nothing to do with the real manufacturer of the media. Even worse, more expensive discs are not necessarily better. Often, discs sold in jewel cases are manufactured by a different company than the same brand sold in spindles (cakebox). Check out this site to learn more about this: www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.

Verbatim are very reliable media - at work we have burnt thousands of them (since Verbatim 2x) and never had one bad disc.

I have checked many of the 4x Verbatim for manufacturer code, and all of the standard 4x's (jewel case, printable or standard version) were always manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemicals (Verbatim is part of Mitsubishi). There are other Verbatim (printed in different colors) that come in slim cases - those were manufactured by Tayo Yuden, Japan (also a very very reliable manufacturer known for highest quality).

I think, according to this experience, you can rely on Verbatim for good quality DVD media. They're not even expensive anymore: the printable 4x DVD+R or -R in jewel cases are about 1.60 Euro in many online shops in Germany. That's a fair price, I think!

Thanks Guys'

Much appreciate your responses as a newster.

I tried squeezing more, by changing compression from auto to manual, which only gave me a 2% increase, hence wasn't much help.

Even if this worked on the 8.9gb file, it won't solve my next video problems as the they are 10-11gb (2-1/2hr files, so will look for app to split these files across 2 disks.

I also need some good references, so will stick to good brands (Vertabium/TDK) for now, till I experiment some more and will also buy some RW.

I am happy to close this post, thanks again.

I had similar problem with cheap media. I did not get the error message, but movie would freeze and hang near the end. I switch to TDK 4x +R media and issue disappeared. Just a little more info.

Ack! Verbatim isn't so good anymore. There were reports of them using some cheap OEM for their disks. Check the codes, they changed...especially the ones on sale at office max.

A lot of people here have had great success with Ritek media. Especially Ridata branded ones. I use the 4X DVD-R G4 type

There were reports of them using some cheap OEM for their disks. Check the codes, they changed...especially the ones on sale at office max. Too bad to hear that - it's always the same with optical media manufacturers

I still know the time when Ritek CDRs were a big no-no brand, but it seems they've done better and better (I also own some G03 and G04 and they seem to be really good)

btw. I was very disappointed recently with Mitsui Golden Dye CDRs - Mitsui used to be the best manufacturer of CDRs, but these media I#m talking of are only mediocre quality (even some Audio CD Players having problems with them).

I hope that Verbatim won't make the one big mistake and spoil their good reputation by delivering more and more batches from no-name manufacturers (or, like Mitsui apparently did: manufacture their own CDRs in only mediocre quality to raise more profit)
