Wow, how simple can it be to use DVD-RB! Awesome program jdobbs!!

I finally got myself an external hard drive and was finally able to give DVD-RB a run (0.50b).

As I am a movie-only type, I re-authored LOTR 3 NTSC using Shrink to keep movie only without any menus/extras/etc. Came out to over 7gb uncompressed.

Then ran DVD-RB on that using all default settings. Average bitrate predicted was 2538, high 3442, and low 393. Reduction level was 53.6%. Not the easiest movie to achieve great results I guess....but that's movie only without anything but two subtitles and one audio! I wonder how this movie would look using Shrink to transcode....

Took 7 minutes to prepare, 230 minutes to encode with CCE 2 pass, and 24 minutes to rebuild (P4 mobile 2ghz laptop). No errors, all works well, and picture looks great.

Only problem I ran into actually was that I had instructed DVD-RB in the options menu to remove all subtitles but English...but it actually kept the Spanish subtitle as well nonetheless....not sure if using Shrink created that problem. I could have removed it with Shrink but I didn't want to create any potential problems with DVD-RB by manipulating the source too much. At least it didn't take up much space.

Again, great work jdobbs....a true one-click program for those of us too overwhelmed with complexity of the old method of CCE to even try it.

This option means not removing the subtitles, but the audio!

Oops! You're right :-)

Guess I was too giddy to try out the program to read everything carefully.

I went back and explored more of DVD-RB.....where is the option to uncheck unwanted subs....or is that not implemented because they take so little space it doesn't really improve on picture quality by removing them?

Dont let JDobbs here you say that ;)

I think it has been fairly widely accepted that anything more than 2 passes doesnt do much other than eat more time.

2 Passes ought to be enough.

Don't know what the discussion about the passes is here like, but to answer the question: no there isn't a option to remove subtitles in DVD-RB.

Cheers

Subtitles use so little space... removing a subtitle is like deciding not to pee in the ocean because it might affect the tide.

Yep 99% of the time they use insignificant space, but what might not be apparent on that side of the puddle (not needing subs and having an amazing THREE subs to choose from (ENG/FRA/SPA), is that its HELLA annoying to flick through 25 languages only to flick over your language and cycle through the pack again (and again) :)

So this is where DVDShrink comes in very handy as it stops unwanted subs from appearing as selectable to a player's internal sub switching menu.

I have seen one disc where the commentary subs took 89MB! .. apparently lots of text and too many bits for the bitmap.

Point taken. I guess I'll put another list so you can select subs to delete....

jdobbs, good analogy....but like they say with the butterfly effect...If I don't remove a certain subtitle from a movie, I may cause a flood or tornado in another part of the world!

As for using more than 2 passes...I may decide to, but since this was my first test run with DVD-RB...in fact, it's the first time I've used CCE, I wanted a shorter run to test. I may decide to redo at 3 passes, but the quality looks good to my eyes on my 27 in TV.

Thanks again jdobbs...you've made it possible for newbs like me to try out CCE.

Next test: Curb Your Enthusiasm - with menus and extras.

I finally also took a try at DVD-RB using CCE basic on LOTR3 and everything went ok, video was excellent, but when I play it on my stand-alone player sony725p I get only 2 channel sound though the display says it sound be 5.1 the remove DTS was not checked. also the player gives me 2 choice either 5.1 or 2 channel but both play just 2 channels.
I ripped with dvd-decrypter in file mode, would It be better if I ripped to a ISO and mounted it? I checked all setting and everything looks correct, so I'm not sure what I did wrong!

OPPS:(

Ok I just find out my problem was the recievers 2 ch button was clicked on by someone. the audio is just fine. forgive my stupidity as I don't know how I missed seeing that when I 1st notice no sound out of my rear speakers or center channel, I put in the original and found I still had only 2 ch's and that is how I found my problem out.
