View Full Version : A new problem ... I think

I do not think that this problem has been adressed before on the forum so here is my question.

I have been re-encoding .avi Japanese animation fansubs to play on my standalone DVD player (DVD-R).

I use:
Audio Extractor to extract the audio to .wavs
Tmgenc (Trial version) to encode the .avis to .mpeg
Photoshop to design the menus
Adobe Encore 1.5 to build the DVD

here is my problem:
I have been re-encoding these .avi files several times to try and get all of the subs to display on screen when viewed on my tv. The general setup is 710x480 NTSC 525 lines. When encoded in this way most of the subs are displayed but they are cropped on the left and right by about 1/4 of an inch, and also cropped at the bottom a little also. I tried to correct this by using a custom size when encoding in tmgenc ... i first tried 680x453 ... this seemed to help a little ... the subs were no longer on the very bottom of the screen but were still cropped on the left and right. Next I tried 660x440 for my custom size. After doing this I did not notice any difference in the subs (still cropped on the left and right) Sooo ...
Im just wondering how to best fit the whole thing in the aspect ratio for my TV ... I dont care if does not fill the whole screen on my TV ... just as long as it is 4:3 aspect or whatever and not 16:9

thanks to anyone who can help me out!! :) :p

Standard size for ntsc dvd is 720x480, 704x480, 352x240. Nothing else will work on a standalone dvd.

I don't think the trial allows mpeg2 encoding. (or atleast didn't)

TMPGENC 2.5 allows for mpeg-2 encoding for a limited time (30 days i think)

And yes, i did mean 720x480 as 680x453 and 660x440 are both proportional to that aspect ratio. So, once again can anyone come up with a solution for me??

i know i have to keep a certain aspect ratio ... i just want to display black borders or something to show the whole image on the screen so that the subs are completly visible on my screen.
i have tried encoding within dvd aspect ratio for NTSC but with the source centered with custom size. the custom size being the 680x440 etc... the DVDs play fine in my standalone but cropping of the subs still occurs.

actually, its 720x480, 704x480 or 352x480. the use of 352x240 in mpeg-2 is possible on almost all standalones, but i dont think it is entirely official, but it IS official for use in mpeg-1

Maybe you must add black Borders because the TV (okey, this is my good english...) show a little part in the plastic masked area...

Here a chart:

TV:

#########################
# #
.........................
# #
#########################

where "#" is the plastic masked area, which is no visible, becuase the plastic of the TV is before...
Mostly DVD's has this border too...

So try it!
