View Full Version : Inconsistent Media space

I burn my discs using the NEC1300A. SO i really do prefer the +R discs. Also my toshiba dvdrom drive can read the +R discs starting at 6x to 13X speeds.

The problem is that while burning a movie which is converted using the Big 3 method with all settings kept at ideal (default) the resulting size of the disc image is good to fit on a DVD-R but it always seems to fall short in space on DVD+R discs. apparently all the +R discs that I have used til now have had about 7mb of less space on them and that really annoys the hell out of me.
Is my recorder reading the wrong amount or is there something logical that can be used to explain this.
I have tried SKY, and TDK -R discs and also TDK, khypermedia and verbatim +R discs. All +R discs have 7mb less compared to -R discs from my experience.
Please help me find a resolve.

Thanks
Chris

There's nothing wrong with your drive or your media. As designed (for better or worse) the capacity of +R is a touch smaller than -R.

That space on +R is reserved incase there is an error or obstruction on the disc so the laser can skip that part. So it can handle unwritable spots up to 7MB. That is surely more usable on +RW.

So how do I go about making sure that the output of the DVD conversion process is just the correct size for DVD+R. I am more used to burning DVD+R due to the reason posted above.

I know there is something to change in reauthorist or something but don't know if thats the right place to change it.
