View Full Version : Problems with DVD burning

This problem occurs mainly when burning data to dvd's, but I have seen it in my movie backups as well. I burn a disc, everything seems to have completed and finished successfully. However, when I try to copy the information back off of the dvd, I get a Cyclical Redundacy Error or a failed CRC check.

I noticed that some of my movies get all choppy and hashed at the end, which I have read is the result of the CRC failure. Basically, the data is corrupted as it is written to the disc. After a little Googling, I read that it can be casue by using DMA with IDE devices and that it may just be a bug in the motherboard's chipset. Turning off DMA is not much of an option, and burning at 2.4x doesn't seem to help much or at all.

I have an Abit KG7-Raid board, a Lite-On 411s burner (running on the normal IDE interface, not the Ultra-ATA one), Nero 6.3.1.10 Ultra Edition, and I am burning to the 4x DVD+R Memorex discs from Best Buy (which I read are decent). I am curious if anyone else is having problems with this and if anyone knows of a solution (or am I just screwed). Most of my movies turn out OK, but I have been getting a handful of duds (like 3 out of every 20 or so), and I would say only 40% of the data discs actually burn right.

I don't really know of any other sites to ask this and I find this site to be extremely useful, so I thought I'd ask here. I am sick of wasting time and discs. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

This is the eternal topic. Use search.

Tips:

1) Upgrade burner firmware to improve writeability
2) Use better quality media
3) Burn slower
4) Test with Nero DVD Speed after burning to see if the disc is good
5) Keep your discs clean before and after burning

And the list goes on.

I did search, but no helpful posts came up with "Cyclical" in them..... same with CRC..... Am I wrong in assuming people would post their actual error message?

Anyhow, I have done all of those, except for DVD Speed (and changing the media). I read on this site last night that the media in the jewel cases vs. the cake boxes are different, which I didn't know. Perhaps I'll pick up some jewel case discs just to see.

I'm not looking for a definitive answer, just some more suggestions, specifically if people are having problems with the same hardware. I read that the chipsets on some motherboards can corrupt data as it's being written, but I've never had any problems with CD's before, only with DVD's.

Sorry if I am beating a dead horse by posting this topic, but I didn't really find any help when I searched old ones......

Try searching with "cyclic" in all forums.. lots of topics come up :)

The cakebox vs jewel is bullpoop because most of the discs sold in the world are in cakeboxes. But of course if I was the disc manufacturer I wouldnt waste an expensive jewel case and labels by placing bad discs in there, so selling bad discs in cakeboxes is easier and people who buy in cakes complain less than the average joe in the supermarket.

Buy ritek, ricoh, verbatim media. Should be fine.

yeah, after some further review, the memorex discs seem kinda shitty. i guess i'll just finish the spindle at 2.4x and hope for the best. oh well, live and learn.

i'll run a search for cyclic and see what i see. thanks.

You have to try different media, you need media that is a good match for your burner. One size does not fit all.

Brand name media may come from different makers, Verbatim for one, uses at least 4 different sources.

Maybe this chart will be of some help.
