View Full Version : Dynamic range compression question.
I am wondering if I should use Dynamic compression when transcoding Ac3 to MP2, my DVD player has Dynamic compression on by default, in that case do I need to add a Dynamic compression option to besweet, or leave the job for the hardware? Plus I am usually using pre encoded Divx file with AC3 soundtrack, in those cases isn’t it safe to assume some sort of Dynamic compression was already done?

ac3 has bigger dynamic range than mp2/mp3, that's why it is advised to compress the dynamic range before transcoding between these formats.
Oh now I get it, In this case should I disable the DRC in my player? Thanks again DSPguru.

Definitely disable the DRC in your player if you are running it through a sound system with decent dynamic range... DRC is more appropriate for making the center channel information louder for listening through smaller speakers such as tv speakers.... running DRC through a 5.1 system or decent stereo setup will sap some of the 'oomph' out of the soundtrack and makes it sound a bit flatter.
By an opposite you confirmed my thoughts, I use this player mainly via the TV and not the amp, so leaving the DRC on would be a good option, thank you for your remarks DIggedy.
