I have a 4.1 gigabyte hdtv .ts file, and when I tried to burn it, the process seemed to work correctly but when I view it in explorer it's only 150MB and only a few minutes long. I assume that was because there's some maximum size for a single file burned to dvdr. What's the max size?

It's not really a max size issue but a max read issue. You can put a 4gig file on disk but you need to know what can and can't read it.

So windows explorer and the videolan player can't read the particular file, any suggestions as to what would?

And also, what would be the maximum size wmv/.ts/avi file that could be burned to a dvdr in data mode without windows explorer failing to read the entire file?

In a regular ISO data mode (ISO9660, CDFS) maximim file size is 2Gb. In UDF mode, sky is the limit.
