I dunno if this thread is going to be closed but anyhow..

I wanna ask people to post screenshots of their desktops. It's always cool to see the desktop of other people. To see what they use and stuff.

there's no reason to close this thread. but if there was, your 'wishfull thinking' wouldn't work. if u have doubts, you can always pm a moderator. but generally speaking, common sense prevails.

and to the topic, may i suggest that ppl post thumbmails that link to the full image, or at least post a resized image, otherwize, it's gonna be hell here ;) if u need a simple but very effective imaage manipulation application, i suggest irfanview.

I just reinstalled a couple of weeks ago and dumped a lot of junk from my desktop, so it's pretty sparse right now. Still, I don't keep a lot on my desktop anyway, I prefer to use the quick link toolbar for commonly used programs so I included that too (it's not blocking anything).

PS. If anyone recognizes my wallpaper picture and knows where I can get a high res version PM me (EDIT: nevermind, thanks Aythos). I love the picture, but had to upscale it to fit the desktop and it doesn't look great.

the image is from a bday online card. i liked it so much and it's been my desktop for over a year now :) usually i'm at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 (more space on the taskbar), but i did 1024x768 for this image. my taskbar is in autohide mode, and i do classic start-menu (i hate all the junk at the default XP start menu).

Its good to see the same applications on peoples computer as mine, like firefox , thunderbird , foobar , open office, Vdub (of corse!) etc . Good to know that we are pushing the GPL force forward :p .

At the moment my desktop is pretty clean. Most of the time it's cluttered with useless files. Every two months or so I move the whole mess to an extra folder and start filling the next desktop. Running out of hd space like RadicalEd is not a problem anymore since I moved my desktop to D: with about 60 gig of free space. Should be enough for the next couple of years. *g*

P.S.: Deviantart really is worth a look! digitalblasphemy.com ist great, too, though most of the files are for paying members only.

P.P.S.: It's a good idea to remove the pictures when quoting. Things start getting messy soon when every picture shows up multiple times.

In fact I just made the "full change" you are talking about some days ago (before that I was only an occasional linux user). After trying some distribs, I found out that gentoo was the best suited for my needs because of it's portage system and very well documented installation instructions (imho rpm based distribution is just hell with all these dependencies and conflicts). Downloading, compiling and installing wine under gentoo is just a matter of typing "emerge wine" and everything works just fine (I use it for DVDShrink mostly). One of the most exciting thing with gentoo is things like "emerge world" which will upgrade every single software you have installed on your system (recompiling everything to achieve the best performances on your specific architecture). If you are looking for some help, don't hesitate to pm me.

Wow, i think you have just convinced me with that emerge world, that sounds amazing! I'm currently upgrading my system 2x2400+ 2gb ram etc :p. But after that i may need your help, thank you :) i don't know why but i kept getting errors with the “make” “install” section of the wine installation.

a good trick for handling excessive whites is to jack up the refresh rate to as high as it goes (100hz on mine) and turn the colour temperature to 5000k, or whatever most closely matches the lighting in your room.

5000k looks weird for a while, but you get used to it.

I have many wallpapers i change from time to time, but they have not much style i guess.
Moreover i have the lost the overview of the icons on my desktop meanwhile, sometimes i use "delete *.lnk" to get rid off all the short cuts...
For all i frequently use in that fast 'short cut bar' on the bottom of Windows desktop, the dos box is a friend of mine too i just start with start=>run=>cmd ;)

I found another one, mrxvt, unfortuanely it isn't compatible with XFCEs composite manager, have to use another wm and xcompmgr.. Still pretty cool though :)

Oh, and KDE is evil, so definitly no konsole :)
