i welcome critisim about the way im making mine in the hopes of learning a better way

video codec: xvid (latest) 2 pass, all defaults
audio codec: ogg vorbis (latest), 128kbps mode3+
program: xmpeg 5.03 , deinterlace=motion detection, no resize, crop blackness, colorspace=YUY, high quality audio conversion, i make the end file size 718mb using xvid's calculator

this produces nice movies every time but im curious if anything could make them look any better

1) What is your source?

2) How come you don't resize? Do you use this ar settings in XviD?

3) Did you look at the guides at this site (www.doom9.org).

Well, I haven't done any home movies in a while, so here's how I backup my DVDs...

Extract VOB files -> DVD2AVI project -> Avisynth (filtering through the roof) -> XviD 2-pass (either HVS-Best or a matrix I custom make for the source) and either using the 5.1 AC3 audio or decoding and compressing to AAC or MPC -> MKV container.

I may change to another audio format to take advantage of 5.1 encoding in the future (i.e. WMA or whatever), but I haven't surveyed all the possibilties yet and I don't have a system that can output anything but AC3 in 5.1 for the moment (laptop).
