Am in serious consideration of making the switch (finaly)
I have a Hauppage Wintv PCI-PVR, Has any one experience with capturing video and converting to dvd with this particular card ??
If so I'd like to hear your experiences, while I'm doing my final reseach and d/l of the ISO'S. Any one have a paticular distro favourite for using with video captures?
Any feed back would be welcome and appreciated
The next one to dump Bill G.

you may try knoppix (or overclockix) which both have tv tuner support. overclockix has mplayer too though. both allow hd installation. should be a relatively trouble-free jump start. eventhough mencoder is not included in either, it's quite easy to download the latest mplayer source and compile by the instructions (./configure, make install), and u'll have both mplayer and mencoder optimized for your hardware.

Check out dyne:bolic 1.3. It's a live cd with an emphasis on multimedia apps. If you do end up liking it you can copy it to your hd and run from there.

why not moving to a Mac? I did it 1+ year ago, and I'm still very satisfied of my choice.
few people come to consider that the Mac operating system TODAY is founded upon a BSD (yes, Berkeley Unix) kernel: BSD, the father of Linux, wrapped by a true Apple Gui (named Aqua).
in any moment you may open a csh or BSD terminal on your Mac desktop... which --may I say it?-- is way _much cooler_ than KDE or Gnome or... :)) ---my personal taste, at least.
and -- you can do exactly the same things you were doing on the winbox: divx's, xvids, handling digital media (photos, movies,...) ... rmvb support is somehow limited, but all other formats exist, as long as you leave Quicktime alone (MPEG4 quality in XviD stands well above Apple MPEG4's implementations... unless you have to edit DV or Kinoma or uncompressed formats, QT is unuseful).
you can use the Office suite (not acce$$) the same way as on a PC, if not better (there are some "unique" features.... go check m$ site)
you can just do *everything* on the Net
well.... games actually DO exist, but ... its not the same as a winbox, but at least less clumsy than games on Linux (I tried RedHat, debian, Slackware, Mandrake in the last 6 months... I may be missing something, but...)
in any case, please ask or PM me if you have any question, and... ah, a Mac does NOT cost more than a decent winbox, just have a try on ebay! ;)
have fun

hmm, he talked about a WinTV PVR ... do you think it will work on Mac Os X ?
And btw, he said he wanted to try Linux, which is free, not to buy another computer which cost a bunch of money
wonderfull mac geek trolling, wow :sly:
(note that i'm not anti-mac -heh i even own one- , just that your post is irrevelant in this particular topic)

That's what I was thinking. Why would someone want to switch from Windows to a more expensive and more limited platform, just because that platform is built on software leeched from the free software community.
If he's buying new hardware, AMD 64-bit, baby.

IMO, a big advantage to Linux is the development and integration.
While its more work, I didnt regret to move to Linux BUT i am still using WinXP and Win2K (just not when I code some simple perl or c++ stuff though ), i also have to admit that i am still encoding/capturing under windows

I would have thought definately cost - the linux will load on to his existing machine, he'd have to buy a Mac.
Also can you tell me where I can get a Mac for $800? thats what it costs for a decent PC here in Australia, Macs start around $2000. Always wanted to have a go at a Mac but the price is prohibitive, and software choices limited.(At least in Australia it is, limited dealers so no competition)
