I just ran a test . Capture fr VHS using iuvcr /huffy 720x480 encode using tmpg dvd source one at 720x480 and one at 320x480 other settings the same ,burned both to dvd . I cant believe or understand this but the encode at 320x480 looks better than the encode at 720x480 . Everything seems more defined and clearer ,not alot but enough to notice . Whats up with that ???? I wonder should I capture at 320x 480 first to save space on my dvds or maybe by captureing at 720 then encoding at 320 Im clearing up the picture??

you have "resolution" and "bits/(pixel*frames)"
if neither is extremely low it should be hard to tell what influences quality more
(just my thought, no guarantees)

Thanks for your input ,in both cases the only variable was the frame size . Everything else is exactly the same

well, you halfed the resolution, doubling the avarage bits per pixel value

Thanks you . So this is why. Should I continue this way or am I doing something that could be accomplished with filters ?

to increase the bit per pixel value you either have to decrease resolution as you do or increase the bitrate

Okay let me be sure I understand . If I capture at 720x480 and then encode at, lets says 5000kps 720x480 . Its bascially the same as capture at 720x480 then encode at 2500kps 352x480 . because by halving the resolution Im increasing the bit rrate ???

it probably is not a one on one relationship, but you got the idea quite well :)
(your not increasing bitrate by decreasing resolution, but 'bit per pixel ratio')

i gues at an equal bit per pixel value a higher resolution is better, because the more pixels the more to work with and get better compression

Thanks . Now that dvd-r are getting cheaper I dont mind only fitting 1 1/2 hrs on ea so I guess Ill keep doing this if it improves quality . Is there a downside to this that Im not aware of ? That also brings up an interseting question . If I capture at 320x480 instead of 720x480 . Then encode at 320x480 but use a high bit rate say 8-9k would the results be even better ?? or would the quality diminish because of the lower frame rate at capture ? Keep in mind Im capturing from vhs to iuvcr w/huffy I also noticed that in CCE there is no frame size adjustment .Hmmmmmmmmm

this doesn't have anything to do with the framerate
i think it's generally recommended to capture at high resolution and to resize while encoding
