I have a Vegas 4.0 project file with my DV file edited (complete with subtitles, fades, etc.).
I have been experimenting with the MediaConcept encoder packaged with the software, but even at 6Mbps average on VBR or 6Mbps CBR, I'm not all that pleased with the output. The encoder with Vega 4.0 does not support 2-pass encoding; I read in the faq that it doesn't matter significantly beyond 6Mbps. I've read a lot of guides and have followed all suggestions, and I'm keeping the video interlaced, bottom field first, and have the correct pixel ratio, etc.
There is still noise in the video, but maybe I'm being too picky.
Anyway, I've been experimenting with MediaConcepts v1.4.2 as an external encoder because it supports 2-pass encoding. However, what is the cleanest way to pass the edited video to this external encoder? So far, I rendered the video in Vegas to a HuffyUV video/raw PCM audio file and then let the external encoder compress it 2-pass, 6Mbps average VBR, all settings turned up (to recommended high settings accoring to help document - search method 11, search range 31, noise sensitivity 3). It still doesn't seem any cleaner.
The faq here recommends recompressing the video to DV and then passing that to your encoder. I tried that and the video looked noticeably worse. Maybe I'm doing something wrong on simply expecting too much.
