View Full Version : PAL DV input recognized as 704x576 ???

Hi,

Since I'm feeding DV-AVI (PAL, 720x576) into TMPGEnc, I thought I should see "4:3 625 line (PAL)" in the "Source Aspect Ratio" option of the advanced tab.

I even saved a template with that option set, and I always load that template before encoding, although I fear this makes no difference.

But, as soon as I select a DV-AVI as input, the "Source Aspect Ratio" option is automatically moved to "4:3 625 line (PAL, 704x576)"

I didn't see any difference actually, regardless of the value of this field in the two cases: same compression speed, same results, apparently.

But I wonder why this is happening: any hint?

Thanks,
Corrado

This is normal. The output will be correct. That is the right setting to be used.

I use NTSC DV which is 720x480 and TMPGEnc sets it to "4:3 525 line (NTSC, 704x480)"

This is actually a common question many users ask on the official TMPGEnc boards.

The confusion happens because 720x576 refers to the DV resolution, not the aspect ratio. However, the setting you are asking about is the aspect ratio, not the resolution.

In otherwords, you are encoding a 720x576 resoution DV file with an aspect ratio of "4:3 625 line (PAL, 704x576)" into a 720x576 resoution mpeg-2 file (in the case of dvd) with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

Aspect ratio and resolution are not the same.

Thanks for the answer, I've never thought of the difference between resolution and aspect ratio

This is misleading in TMPGEnc. It would have been better to show the pixel aspect ratio (PAR) instead.
