Thinking of buying your first plasma display?

Or maybe you're a little pissed at the lifeless images your old 42" (854x480) plasma screen gives you..... You know, the one you paid a small fortune for only a couple of years ago?

Well have a gander at these new Hitachi high definition (WUXGA 1024x1024) (http://live.hitachidigitalmedia.com/http://ebizwebprod.hitachi-eu.com:83/NASApp/DMG/index.html) plasma screens.

And the prices are pretty good too, especially when you consider they offer 150% more vertical pixels than previous plasma displays.

Enjoy and live dream!

Cheers

PS: They would make a darn good display for a PC

isn't WUXGA 1650x1050?

And your PC screen wouldn't look too good on 42" unless you're watching movies. Keep in mind, you get 1920x1200 screens in 23"/24" size and that's the "usual" size for that particular resolution. Anything else is just blowing up the image, which is no problem when talking about video (and possibly games), but if you blow your average computer program up to that size, it's no longer useful for work. People are used to a certain font size, and if the fonts are considerably larger, you have to go further away from the screen (which causes room problems.. you need a table for your keyboard and mouse), and it would still not be what you'd expect a computer program to look like.

Actually I always thought WUXGA was 1920x1200 but it would seem Hitachi is describing it otherwise!

Maybe anything above XGA's 768 vertical pixels is now deemed to be UXGA

I'm more than a little upset because I forked out a small fortune for an WXGA 1366x768 42" plasma display only a couple of months ago. Which cost me around a grand more!

And shame on you Doom9, have'nt you ever used an infra-red keyboard with built in mouse... I've only got a cheapo one but some are really quite good now and look great when stored under your IKEA glass topped coffee table :D

I have a radio mouse at work.. and every two months I run out of battery.. which doesn't exactly inspire my confidence in that technology.. neither does when I move the mouse a bit away form my PC and suddenly movement is no longer smooth. There is a great bluetooth set from Logitech out now, I have the same thing but using traditional cables. And knowing how 800x600 looks on my 21" TFT screen, whatever resolution that screen has, for PC programs at 42" things will look awful (but it will be aswome to watch movies).

According to the definitions I found on the web, XGA is 1024x768, WXGA is its widescreen bother (1280x800), and WUXGA is one resolution higher, thus 1650x1024. You said the resolution was 1024x1024.. didn't you mean 1920x1024? I might get myself the 24" Samsung TFT screen (resolution 1920x1200), but it already pains me to know how much it's going to set me back.. but that resoluion is good for a 24" screen, and finally I'll be rid of crappy 4:3 screens altogether (not that my 213T were anything like crap, but since I use my screen often to watch movies, a widescreen version is definitely the way to go for me).

Yep it's excruciatingly painful to read some of those LCD screen price tags!

In the UK I often see piddly piss pot 20/22" LCD TV screens next to 32" 37" and 42" Plasma TV's costing around the same. True LCD screens have always offered higher pixel counts but it's a bit wasted on an TV

I'm off to see one of these 42" Hitachi screens later on this week. But get this, according to a preliminary report published in this months T3 magazine, the display panel has a min. life of 8hours a day times twenty years!

I think I better order that extra keg of beer!

Looks nice... but still bloody expensive for an LCD screen!

Hey Soulhunter, have you read anything yet in the European press that the prices of digital monitors are set to rise, due to the fact they can be used as TV monitors and not just PC monitors!

Like we don't pay enough already....

What am I reading here?!? A cordless keyboard with built-in mouse? You obviously don't mean a really built-in one, do you? Maybe a touchpad??? That would be exactly what I'm dreaming of for a long time. What I have is a thing with built-in trackball - because I didn't find any other solution for my living room. As you maybe can imagine it's veeery annoying to have to clean your hands before watching TV and after eating chips, and... If not, the trackball-wheels catch up dirt like nothing else on earth ;) and thus stop moving quite too soon.

Wow, there is in fact one seller of wireless keyboards with integrated touchpad out there!!! But, Gosh!, 280$ is a bit heavy, isn't it?

As I mentioned before, I just use a really cheap IR board (cost about £15.00).

Mine has an soft 'rubber type' mouse pointer, on the top right of the board, which you control with your thumb together with left and right mouse click buttons, on the top left hand side of the board, which you also control with your thumb.

You just hold the keyboard in the palms of your hands and simply 'thumb away' (Which reminds me, was it Darwin who predicted that our thumbs will eventually evalute from our bodies... So much for his theory :D)

Anyway, the darn thing is so powerful it's able to work around ten meters away from the IR detector. Unlike those crappy bluetooth (and RF) efforts Doom9 mentioned.

I really can't understand why they're not bundled with these new Media PC's.

Cheers

I can't imagine using a keyboard for watching movies, for my needs a remote is more than enough.. that leaves one hand to use the remote and you use the other to plunge into sticky things like chips, salty nuts and whatnot. My remotes, as my keyboards are pretty darned clean and I'd personally kick anybody for days for coming withing 10cm of any of my computer equipment if their fingers were dirty.

I only use the remote control keyboard when I'm using my big screen as an split screen TV/PC monitor...

...I'm using it right now (or should that be 'write' now) to type this.

Needless to say I'm around 10 feet away from the screen.... It all works really well.
