My favorites are the german soundtrack of Captain Future which is a legendary anime series from 1979. It's a funky analog synthesizer sound composed by Christian Bruhn and available on CD in germany, it's a shame it's exclusive to germans.

Another one is Coffy from 1973 which is a classic blaxploitation movie with Pam Grier (also starring in Foxy Brown and Jacky Brown). It's very soulfull Jazz Funk composed by Roy Ayers. There is at least a dozen other great blaxploitation soundtracks most popular are probably Shaft by Issac Hayes and Syperfly by Curtis Mayfield.

All of the above are complete albums by single artists. As far as songs of soundtracks with various artist there are a lot I like, a great thing about soundtracks is the best music of all kind of different genres is assembled and often oldies.

The first Matrix - great mix of rock and techno, and was actually used in the movie.

Dracula 2000 - modern rock's best artists imitating a vampire band - produced by Jonathan Davis, who could not perform on the soundtrack due to contract reasons IIRC, but all of the music sounds mysteriously similar to KoRn ;)

Out of Africa. Great movie, great soundtrack, great book. A combination I've rarely seen. This picture, and Amadeus, got an old rock 'n roller interested in classical music. But hey, don't get me wrong, guys, I didn't throw any of my Stevie Ray Vaughan collection away! :)

@dolemite,
if you like these Soul / Funk / etc. things like the 1973 soundtrack you mentioned, then you should check out the soundtrack from 'Out of Sight' - it's from David Holmes, brilliant artist btw. I like him a lot!

there's also a very very cool Remix album from Shirley Bassey, which is almost unknown (sadly!). it's called 'The Remix Album...Diamonds are forever'. o.k. it's not a soundtrack itself, but a lot of the tracks on it are (Goldfinger, Diamonds are forever, etc.) You can find Remixes from Propellerheads, Kenny Dope, Groove Armada, etc.
I really do recommend this!

Tracks:
01 - Where do I begin (awayTEAM Mix)
02 - Goldfinger (Propellerheads Mix)
03 - Light my fire (Kenny Dope Remix)
04 - Diamonds are forever (Mantronic 007 Mix)
05 - Easy thing to do (Nightmares On Wax)
06 - Never never never (Groove Armada Mix)
07 - Big Spender (Wild Oscar Mix)
08 - Spinning Wheel (DJ Spinna Remix)
09 - Light my fire (Twelftree's Lady Mix)
10 - If you go away (DJ Skymoo Mix)
But now my absolutely favourite soundtrack: 'The Spawn'. The movie is absolutely crap! One of the worst flicks i have ever seen in this genre! But the worse the movie the better the soundtrack!!!
for every track one metal-band and one techno/electro/drum&bass-act worked together.

Here's the tracklist - it speaks for itself:
01 - Crystal Method & Filter - Can't you trip like I do
02 - Marylin Manson & Sneaker Pimps - Long hard Road
03 - Orbital & Kirk Hammett - Satan
04 - Korn & The Dust Brothers - Kick the PA
05 - Butthole Surfers & Moby - Tiny Rubberband
06 - Metallica & DJ Spooky - For whom the Bell tolls
07 - Stabbing Westward & Josh Wink - Torn apart
08 - Mansun & 808 State - Skin up pin up
09 - Prodigy & Tom Morello - One Man Army
10 - Silverchair & Vitro - Spawn
11 - Henry Rollins & Goldie - T-4 Strain
12 - Incubus & DJ Greyboy - Familiar
13 - Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot - No Remorse (I wanna die)
14 - Soul Coughing & Roni Size - A Plane on a yellow Moon
i hope you like one of my recommendations. please give my feedback! :)

greetings,
Malcolm

i only actually own 1 soundtrack CD, so i'd better say that one (nobody's posted it yet :|)

fight club... awesome stuff, even though i typically don't go for that kind of music.

also, i'd LOVE to get the OST for FLCL... i always have the volume jacked when the credits roll in that show. i'm not good at languages at all, so it says something when i remember the words phonetically and can sing them at karaoke (actually, same goes for the Chobits theme, but you guys could have guessed that from my avatar). only problem with FLCL is that even the show is peak-limited well beyond sane levels, and the dynamics are shot to hell. real pity. i hear the CD is worse, but it's probably worth it for the music.

Blade Runner rocks the haus

can't say i like Star Wars. they should've ditched John Williams and just used Holst... same stuff really, but original (and better).

Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis (not to be confused with Fritz Lang's 1927 effort) has awesome bebop all through it. very cool, especially the big explosion scene. good music! w00t!

hmm... that's all i can think of for now (btw, Ghost in the Shell was incredibly nice music)

I like the Captain Future soundtrack as well, it is an unforgettable piece of childhood :D.

When it comes to classical soundtracks I like the Stargate OST from David Arnold, all music by Basil Poledouris (Conan, Les Miserables etc) and James Horner.

A nice jazz/funk soundtrack is for instance the Bullitt soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin.

Bladerunner - Vangelis
Highlander - Queen

Have you all missed "Heavy Metal"?
That is an exceptionally great soundtrack  Also the soundtrack of "Heavy Metal - F.A.K.K. 2" aka. "Heavy Metal 2000" is really good, although not as good as the original :)
Also have to agree to "Bladerunner", a stunning soundtrack.
And the soundtrack to the japanese anime series "Noir" is real good, warm and pumping energy the same time.

How could i forget
The soundtrack of "Cowboy Bebop"! The series and the movie!

I can't be bothered to buy most soundtracks. Since most new soundtracks are just repackaging music I bought the album for almost a decade ago. I have always been musically ahead of my time and generation. But......

Nothing wrong with the Dust Brothers. [Not to be confused with the chemical brothers who were the dust brothers before they found out someone was already the dust brothers] They really should release more albums of work. It's sharp, crunchy, and generally dark. But always fun. Another song/album always close at hand.

It's that way for a reason. It is supposed to be loud and abrasive like haruko. I think they succeded.

Actually F.A.K.K. 2 was a game for the PC built on the Quake III engine with loose ties to Heavy Metal 2000. Which might I add Heavy Metal 2000 was a massive disappointment. Less TnA than the first. Less famous voice actors. A fairly crappy story. And the soundtrack was mostly awful.

sort of... but that's what dailog normalization in ac3 is for... there's no need to hard limit ac3 even if you do want obnoxiously loud music.

besides, "ride on shooting star" has the same ReplayGain value as "Let me be with you", and the music is compleeeetely different...

but yeah... awesome stuff. i even have a "P!" sticker on my car :)

Just to name a dozen, 99.9% of movies by either Tarentino, David Lynch (most soundtracks by Angelo Badalamenti) or Tim Burton (most soundtracks by Danny Elfman) deserve nothing short of absolute respect and admiration.
But my favorite of all times is Baraka (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103767/#comment)
IMO of course. ;)

ah! i forgot about Angelo Badalamenti and Danny Elfman.

i'll throw Michael Kamen in there too. pretty good all-rounder. i can't agree about John Williams tho. ugh. he's like Wagner to me - persistent grating noise that competes with the action. the best parts sound way too much like other composer's best parts. (watch Star Wars on mute, and put Holst's "the Planets" on.)

Run Lola Run was pretty tight. and punch me in the face for not mentioning Amelie.

my pet-hate is soundtracks that consist of crap that you could hear any day of the week (interspersed with LFE rumbles to add some kind of drama).

[edit]

oh, and i really like the 2nd closing theme from Chobits (ningyo hime). don't ask why, it just suits really well.

Then you should go out and buy some Juno Reactor albums. They are the ones who made a large portion of the music for those movies.

That's a tough one since movie music is generally just something that lies in the background -- hardly ever do I recognize any real effort with the soundtracks. But here are the exceptions:

1. Conan The Barbarian

Okay, Basil Poledouris must have composed this stuff in a berzerkian frenzy or something. Incrediable. The original soundtrack CD has been out of print for ages and sells for $100 or something on eBay. For a good reason, this stuff is awesome. This could have easily been released as a pure classical album without any movie connections.

2. Kill Bill Vol. 1

In computer demos (remember the Assembly meetings in the 90's?) we've gotten used to seeing music perfectly synched to action. Apparently Mr Tarantino is the only movie director who has seen some computer demos and decided "wow, this is a good idea, I'll do this in my movie!". The music reflects the events really, really well, and the soundtrack also boasts some pretty excellent songs.

The Battle Without Honor Or Humanity part is so very, very extremely cool that I'm speechless.

Kudos to Tarantino for using existing, good songs instead of having some no-talent mass composer whip up something totally empty and forgettable for the movie (not everyone is Basil Poledouris at his finest hour).

3. Moulin Rouge

The same positive points as for Kill Bill Vol. 1 apply here too. Very interesting versions of good songs. Perfectly synched with events and action. The Yes We Can Can / Smells Like Teen Spirit was a pretty breathtaking experience.

Kudos to Luhrman for using existing, good songs.

Honorable mentions:

Pulp Fiction

Not quite as good as KBv1, but does have some excellent songs, like the title theme and Neil Diamond's classic.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark

I generally don't like Williams, his compositions usually sound like children's commercials, but this movie has some exceptions.

The legendary Map Room Dawn theme is fricking excellent. I listen to it very loud and it almost melts my spine.

The Lord Of The Rings

Has some pretty good themes. But not much, most of it is overly clichéd and banal, IMO.

Hans Zimmer

Okay, Mr Zimmer is a composer and not a movie, but he has a few pretty good songs. That few being much, much more than for average movie composers.

Joseph LoDuca

He did some pretty good work with the Xena series.

Also, IIRC the movie Out Of Africa had some pretty good themes, but it's been ages since I last heard them.

I'm certainly a metal fan, but I've never heard any decent metal in a movie. I hear Dracula 2001 (or something, not sure about the year) had a rather nice song by Tristania. Freddy Vs Jason features some pretty good bands, but not at their best, not at all...

Also The Matrix soundtrack has Du Hast by Rammstein, which is a total killer, but I never heard it in the movie :(

Speaking of heavy music, I must say that it's very easy to use it in action movies (especially with vampires, a lot of fights and car chases :D). I like hard guitar riffs and rhythmic industrial noises, but I think they are overused in nowadays. It's boring. Directors of commercial movies just using the same schemes over and over again. Anyone can take almost any KoRn, Rammstein, Deftones, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and so on song and action scenes will most likely be dynamic enough to sell tickets. Actually it's like symbiosis. Movies becoming more popular because of heavy bands and bands getting new fans after some movies. First they sell tickets, then DVDs, then they show music videos from movies on MTV and then sell soundtrack CDs.
Bottom line is money. But that's showbiz. It's how things work. I should not complain. :)
In case with action movies, I must say that Tarantino didn't take an easy way with Kill Bill (I haven't seen vol.2 yet). Music picked out very well and wise. It's very fresh and attractive for action fans at the same time.
And with all respect to other people's opinions, I think that movies like Spawn, Queen of the Damned, XXX, Fast and Furious, Underworld (I liked song on the ending titles) should be released on soundtrack CDs only. :D

An interesting idea! Not sure if I would like that or not, but the idea sounds good. Makes the music more intimate with the movie. the song "Keep Their Heads Ringing" from Dr Dre. Can only be found on the "Friday" soundtrack. I hated having to buy that CD just for that song, but I didn;t have to get crap from only one artist..lol.
