file extensions

I have windows xp and I can't tell what kind of file i'm looking at. Is there one easy way I can tell the .xxx?

Yes. Tools > Folder Options > View. Disable "Hide extensions for known file types".

A quick way... right-click, click "open with >", then "choose program..." and it will tell you full filename above the list of programs.
