View Full Version : "cce_encoding_init()failed: unknown error"

I tried to backup The House of Sand and Fog lastnight with .43b and had enabled "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras". During the encode of the second .m2v cce stopped and gave an error:
"cce_encoding_init()failed: unknown error"
I restarted the process from scratch without "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras" and it encoded right through the "problem area". I searched the forums for this error and could not find anything. I may need to post this in the CCE forum as it may not be DVD-RB related.
Anyone have any ideas?

I'll mess with it tonight and try it again and see what transpires. Never seen it myself either. What I found in the forums was unhelpful.

I can confirm I've received the same error message.
Disc was Brother Bear Disc 2 NTSC. If you hit OK
it will continue and it appears the end result is
just fine. But it happened a lot throughout the
processes, probably 20 times. I think it is related
to half height option. Same error happened on
previous versions before the new option to automatically
do all extra half was implemented.
I just did Dickie Roberts and did NOT get this error
but got the Runtime 9 error upon the last step rebuild.
Using DVD-RB v43b, CCE 2.50.
If you want more info, please let me know.

Actually it happened to me also, I think it was with dvdrb 0.41, cce 2.66, elcce 1.8b. I don't remember which movie it was with though. Complete dvd with nothing being removed, and all title sets at 1/2D1 other than the main movie. Funny thing though it only errored on a few cells which were still or blank cells (i.e .15 sec cell at the end of the title containing two cells). Well i hope i explained it correctly.

This happened to me on my last two encodes, the last one using .43b. In my case, both times it occurred during the multi-pass phase of a very short Cell. One was 10 frames long, the other was 33 frames, each containing just blank (black) frames. Both were Half-D1, one was also 4:3 to 16:9.
I tried playing around with CCE manually, but it kept freezing or giving this error. As a workaround I just set CCE to CBR for those cells and encoded it that way, then I incremented Encode_Progress= in rebuilder.ini and let RB continue with the next Cell. I'll check out the .ecl for the last encode and see if I find any problems, but I'm doubtful.

Reran the back-up as follows:
-With "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras" disabled, works fine.
-With "Resize to half D1" applied to VTS_01 (menus) and VTS_09 (extras), works fine.
-With "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras" enabled, fails during encode.

If someone in the NTSC R1 world let me know what disc they have backedup using the "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras" feature, I would like to test a few titles that have known success. Then I can try to eliminate some causes for this.

I think I have tracked down this error. It is caused by using non_linear=1 on these problem cells. I created a new .ecl using the same source and didn't encounter the error, but the original item.ecl from RB kept reproducing it. So one-by-one I went thru the files and found the problem setting.
If anyone else encounters this problem please try editing your item.ecl and REBUILDER.ecl (you probably only have to change one, but I don't know which) to change non_linear=1 to non_linear=0 and make sure to delete the problem .vaf file. Then have DVD-RB continue with encoding. This worked for me.

wmansir,
You make the change in 3 step mode after the prepare phase, right? Excuse my dumb question...
Edit: jdobbs to the rescue

I'm not sure if it is single cells, I posted more details in the bug report thread, here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=480704#post480704). Basically, every time I encountered this error it was on Half-D1 and very short (10-33 frames for me) blank clips. Regular length Half-D1 clips encode fine, and so did very short Full-D1 clips.

I've only been using 3-click mode, and I only did this once, because I didn't know the cause before, so here is what I did.
1. Prepare
2. Encode
3. Get this error, pause DVD-RB THEN close CCE.
4. fix .ecl files, delete .vaf
5. continue DVD-RB, select YES to start at last encode segment
6. Rebuild.

After some more testing, it appears the problem isn't a function of lenght, but content.
The following encodes fine with non_linear=1
Colorbars(352,480).trim(1,30)
ConvertToYUY2()
AudioDub(BlankClip())
But this generates an error:
Colorbars(352,480).trim(1,30).blankclip(30)
ConvertToYUY2()
AudioDub(BlankClip())
Both encode fine with non_linear=0.
I also tried BlankClip()s 2000 frames long, and get the error.
Also, it does not affect Full-D1, as this
Colorbars(720,480).trim(1,30).blankclip(30)
ConvertToYUY2()
AudioDub(BlankClip())
Encodes without error.
@jdobbs
As for workarounds, there are a couple. These blank clips are usually only encountered in short cells, so you could either set all half-D1 cells below say, 60 frames, to non_linear=0, or you could set them to CBR, since that avoids this error too.

and I do not get this error anymore. Previously I was using SP 2.50.

@wmansir
What version of CCE were you using?
@jdobbs
You use 2.50SP, correct?
I also have received this error using 2.50SP. Haven't done any backups in the last few days. My wife bought a movie (Cheaper by the dozen) and I was excited to try .45 but....it's a two sided DVD5...didn't need compression...copied it with dvd decrypter. Such a let down.

First, let me join with all the others in letting you know how much I appreciate DVD Rebuilder - it is truly wonderful software.
I'm also getting the same "cce_encoding_init()failed: unknown error"
when trying to backup with "Half-D1 and Half Space for Extras" enabled.
I've also tried using the "Resize to Half-D1" option under the AVS Advanced Experts Option and still get the same error message in the CCE encoding stage.

Welcome to the boards rachel0227. Out of curiosity, have you tried v0.46 on this movie? I had some success with it. May be worth a shot to see what happens.

Thanks for the Welcome! I did try version 0.46B, but had the same failure message during the encoding stage. Both 0.45b and 0.46b will work though, as long as I do not select the "half D1" options.

@wmansir,
changing non_linear didn't help in my case.
I changed from VBR to OPV and that solved the problem.

I tried all of the things mentioned in this thread and none worked everytime. I just changed made a quick change to the rebuilder.ecl for the offending segment to not create a new vaf file and then changed the vbr pass to 1.
I tried this on Bigfish with 0.49.
I know that it looks like it has been fixed but in my latest encode I encountered same problem with 15frames only encodes. had to put nonlinear=0 to all those files and delete vaf files.
just letting jdobbs know that he might have taken care of 30 frames but still occurs with 15 frames with then newest 0.49

cce_encoding_init()failed on a 30 frame segment.
I use v.56 DVD_RB. I just got this problem for the first time today on "Bulletproof Monk" Region 2.
However Changing Non_linear to 0 fixed the problem, however it still exists in the program.
