First off this is an excellent site. I read all the docs and to be honest I find it a bit overwhelming so if what I say is incorrect or if it sounds stupid (which is very likely  ) I apologize in advance.

Here's what I want to accomplish I bought an awesome home theater
(M & K speakers and top of the line Denon receiver for those interested) and I love to show it off to company:). What I would like to create is a compilation of the best sounding scenes from different movies and put them on one DVD. I would also like to seperate the scenes with still image (say the image of the dvd cover that will play next). I know this sounds a little weird but it would save me from getting up.......changing the dvd.......waiting for the menu to load.........you get the point. Plus I actually owned a THX demo laserdisc that was cool to watch and was very similar to what I want to make.

Could someone try to explain to me what would be the best and easiest way to do that? Is there an easy program that would help me accomplish this? Should I post this thread on a different board?
I read all the faqs and guides and I have an idea of what has to be done but I'm probrably wrong and rather than typing all the "wrong"
steps I'm hoping someone could kinda lead me in the right direction:rolleyes: Thanks for any input in advance.

While it's not impossible, I should warn you that this task is not easy and will require a lot of learning about DVD authoring. Also, since you want the "big sound", the only software affordable authoring software I can think of that supports 5.1 is DVD-lab (http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dvdlabpro.html). Of course, before authoring, you'll have to cut out the desired segments, create still picture tracks, etc. So if you just want to show off, it would be much easier to get off the couch and change the disc. And if you seriously want to get into DVD authoring, then welcome aboard.

Thanks for the response Dimmer. I know I'm getting in over my head with this but I'm gonna give it try. I would like to learn more about the whole dvd authoring anyway so I'll see how much trouble I can get into:rolleyes: I've accepted the fact that it will be an uphill battle and will probrably be flamed in all my threads for annoying everyone about something stupid..........but hey sometimes that's the only way to learn.......................Thanks again

I've heard a lot of good buzz on this program, and it's nice to see that Doom9 recently authored a brand spankin' new guide for us to play with.

Doom9's DVD-lab guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd-lab.htm)

Recent posts on DVD-lab (search) also indicate that there's a lot of native help wrapped into it; I don't know if there's any step-by-step guides included, but take a look at this one, it'll give you an idea of what you'll be facing, and other tools you might need to start getting familiar with.

Thanks for your help it looks pretty clear cut. Of course it's not as easy as it looks  but it seems like a good starting point. Would I actually have to decrypt and rip it to my hard drive before I used the program or can I just pop a dvd in and rip a vob file right out? Boy am I gonna have fun getting into trouble :sly:

Thanks

Actually, it might be better to attack a project that's easier to accomplish. I don't mean to discourage you, by any means, but if you're brand new to ripping, even a program as intuitive as DVD-lab could turn into a hellish task.

Many of our members have started out with DVD Shrink. It's pretty easy to use, is well supported, and best of all....it's free! You won't be able to accomplish all of your stated objectives, menus, etc., but doing a few "main movie only" rips with Shrink will get you familiar with some terminology, some DVD structure, and best of all, you'll build some confidence by being successful right out of the gate!

I hope we hear from you in a couple of days and you say, "Wow! DVD-lab is great, I'm absolutely kickin' with it!," but if you decide to climb a smaller mountain, get with us.

I am going to try a few things, including shrink and DVD-lab and see what I'm up against. Actually it will be a few months before I try because I'm about to get rid of this antique computer. Then I'll be ready to go. I'm just wondering if I should hold out for the new dual-layer burners or buy soon and then add an external later..............any thoughts? Thanks for the friendly responses. I know what I'm doing is very difficult and hopefully my persistence will pay off. Sometimes that's the best way to learn. I'm sure I'll be bugging everyone in the near future;)

Thanks again
