View Full Version : DVD Shrink 3.1 Problems w/ backing up DVD

Hi. I am having a problem with DVD Shrink 3.1. I tried backing up Kill Bill vol. 1 onto a Memorex DVD-R, which I have successfully backed up other movies with, but neither my computer DVD drive or DVD player can recognize the disc. It seems to know that it is of DVD format, but still cannot play. When I use winDVD 5, it just locks up. Any suggestions? What should I do to ensure playback on most DVD players?

I removed only one file to improve the compression percentage. Should this make a difference? Thanks!

Yes, it probably will make a difference. In most cases, the files on a DVD are interdependant. Remove one file and the whole thing is quite likely to break.
Leave all the files in place and shrink the stuff you don't want to still frames with no audio. That will get you most of the way to better compression ratios without breaking the DVD. If you're really intent on removing things from the DVD, there are tools that will help do that without destroying the overall structure of the files: DVDStripper, VOBBlanker, DVDReMake and even IfoEdit if you're willing to work at it hard enough.

I only removed the 5.1 French AC3 audio. I did not touch the video or menu structure at all. So, why would this cause it not to be able to run?

I retried the burn, and came with the same results. I explored the DVD, and it has the proper structure. For some reason, though, it will not play. I've only removed the French audio from the movie.
Has anyone else run into similar problems?
I have a LiteOn 811s burner with a LiteOn 166s player. They worked fine with my Matchstick Men backup(among others), but cannot back up Kill Bill vol.1 DVD. I've read the guide on Doom9.org for DVD Shrink, followed it completely from start to finish, but still I get this error. Someone please help me out.

PS - On another note, I tried to open the DVD that I burnt with DVD Shrink. I got the error
"Failed to Read file 'E:'
Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

it really does sound like a media problem. or it could be a combination of your write speed and your media.
although you had a sucessfull result with a previous back-up and the same media, it may be that there are a few bad disks in the bunch.
a few things you could try:
1. try creating an .iso file with dvdshrink and using dvd decrypter to burn that image to a blank disc, and
2. set your write speed of your burner to lower than max speed - eg. 2X
3. buying a different brand disc and trying again. you can read up on other forum members experiences with media in the
DVD Burning Forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=60)
hope that helps

edit:/ and one further tip, try playing the 'shrunk' files in a software dvd player (WinDVD, PowerDVD, or even Ifoedit) prior to burning and check that everything works as the original.

So even though it says that the burn process completed successfully, there still could be a problem with the media?
Also, I have recorded numerous of these same Memorex DVD-R DVD's on my Panasonic DVD recorder. And I have successfully made back-ups of movies and games with this media. So why would the media be a problem?
Also, the LiteOn 811s burns with no problem at 4x. It seems its the media files themselves that DVD Shrink creates that is the problem, not the burner or the media. What I want to know is how to fix this problem?
How can I check the files that DVD Shrink has made on my computer to see if it can run off of the PC Hard drive?

well personally i would use the 'dvd play' function of Ifoedit, as i have found that as a software player it is very pedantic about dvd structure.
you can download a copy from the doom9 download page:
software download page (http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm)
anyways, open up Ifoedit, hit the 'open' button and navigate to one of the .ifo files (eg. VIDEO_TS.ifo) from your 'shrinked' files, then press the 'dvd play' button. this will open up the built in player and play the 'shrunk' movie. navigate to all of the menus etc, and see if there are any errors.
if so, post back here with the error, and where you were when it occured.

Ok. Heres the deal. I downloaded the IfoEdit from Doom9's download page, and it came up with the following error when I tried the DVD Play feature:
First, a dialogue box popped up that said:
"Found Filters for DirectX:
DSound Renderer
Video Renderer
AC3 Prologic Decoder
Overlay Mixer
Line21 Decoder
InterVideo Video Decoder
DVD Navigator"
When I clicked OK, another dialogue box popped up. This one said:
"*2 out of 3 DVD-Video streams failed to render properly
-video stream
-subpicture stream
*No Valid DVD-Video volume could be located
Do you still want to continue?"
When I clicked yes, the first time it didn't work. It came up with one last dialogue that said "Cannot get the IVideoWindow interface. Sorry, can't play DVD-Video titles."
The second time I tried the same steps and it opened the movie. Strange, yes. So what does this mean for me?

i could be wrong but i usually receive that error if i try to use ifoedit when i have dvdshrink open as well as there is a conflict between the programs/filters.
try closing all apps before starting ifoedit and see if the errors persist. i dont believe it is a result of your 'shrinked' files though.

Both was closed. I reposted, I left out one of the errors that I received the first time I tried the DVD Play feature. (The 2 out of 3 DVD-Video...)
The second time I tried, it only came up with the one I had originally listed (*No DVD...)

Should I try to make a Disc Image using IfoEdit with the files that DVD Shrink created, or should I debug first to find out what is giving me those errors?

definitely de-bug first!
you can also use ImgTool Classic to create .iso images and use DVD Decypter to burn the .iso image to a blank disc.
but please check that it will play first.

I don't understand. It takes 2 tries to open the same file, the first time unsuccessful, the second successful. Seems strange to me, I get the same problem every time I back the movie up with DVD shrink. What other methods do you recommend for compression?
I've read about using DVD Decrypter and compressing those files. What compressor do you recommend?

hmmmm...not sure exactly what the problem is with this title and dvdshrink (to be perfectly honest, i rarely use the program)...sorry.
as for other 'one click' tools, well there really are a lot out there - clone dvd, dvd2one, recode, etc etc. to find outa bit more have a read in the One click DVD backup solutions forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=65).
i will however recommend using 'rejig' a transcoding tool developed by nic, one of the moderators here.
ReJig 0.5 Released (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66777)
and also dvd-rb, again developed by a forum moderator, jdobbs, which uses cce (and also rejig and quenc for a free alternative) to re-encode you video in a one-click method.
dvd rebuilder (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=75)
research a few of the methods, try some of the guides/programs, and see which one you like, and which works for you.
good luck
