Chapters: chapters storage is also possible by using advanced content, but Ahead goes another way and uses a feature called "user space" (udta atom) which allows you to attach anything you want in MP4 (tags, cd/dvd-covers, family pictures, viruses ). you will need a player/filter that can handle this special chapters info (ie aheads dshow filter)
I think it would be fair to mention the 3ivx DS Splitter's support for the Ahead/Nero style Chapters :)

That's not very helpful either: I don't intend to reconstruct the MP4 file layout from some source code...

Sorry Alex,
Maybe bond can help you out, he seems to know where to find most things regarding Mpeg4.
In the meantime have you had a look at how MP4UI works?
Cheers

this document is to new, so i can´t find it on internet. it was know as "14496-Part 1: Systems, AMENDMENT 6: MP4 file format"and is now a new part. but at http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/ (chiariglione is the chef of MPEG) and http://www.itscj.ipsj.or.jp/sc29/ (official hompage of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 - jpeg, mpeg and so on) you can find much information.

Haali Matroska Splitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/) - work fine with MP4 Container (AVC/AAC+). In combination with FFDSHOW it's able to view files from Nero Recode...
Now Haali's Parser can split:
1)MKV: very much formats are suported
2)MP4:mpeg1/mpeg2/mp3/ftypavc1/mp4v, mp4a and avc1 streams/VobSub
3)AVI

Hi,
Some useful links which could be added : an Overview of H.264/AVC and MPEG-4 Codec Products (http://radio.irt.de/docs/codecs.html) and some structural atoms doc (http://www.mp4ra.org/atoms.html).

Nice find Kurt,
I wonder why the DivX/DXN Mpeg4 codec is not on the list?

and i wonder where I can find good info about libavcodec... I’m trying to strip it but its little bit hard to do with such a big code :( I only need/want the h264 decoder part...
so if anyone has some suggestions about how I can do it or if someone find a doxygen output about libavcodec with those drawings about how the files are linked… please let me know
thnks in advance
