View Full Version : (Newbie) Pure interlaced content and GKnot

Hey all,

I've read the guides, but am still unclear on a few aspects of my problem, so I thought asking a question here would be a good idea.

I'm currently encoding the first season of Strangers with Candy to DivX. Now, this marked my first attempt to encode TV episodes, and I quickly encountered the Bane of All Newbies: Interlacing. Initially, I followed the guides, but things weren't working; I quickly realized, though, that my problem was that SwC isn't telecined, but is actually pure NTSC interlaced content, with every frame exhibiting interlacing (at least on most episodes: some aren't interlaced at all, despite DVD2AVI claiming so, and the pilot is telecined).

Now, I've so far been using TomsMoComp to deinterlace, and it does a fairly good job. Thing is, though, that every site I read has different suggestions: some claim Toms is best, while others go for Smooth/Smartdeinterlace, etc. I really have no idea what to pick here, and am *very* new to Avisynth scripting, so I'd have no idea what the best options for non-automatic filters were anyway.

So can anybody offer any suggestions, and preferrably good settings to go along with them? I'm sure there're deinterlacing experts out there who have more insight into this matter.

Thanks,

-R

PS: Intriguingly, while playing around with TMPGEnc one day, I noticed that its "Even Fields First" deinterlacer seemed to work pretty well. Is there any way to introduce this into the GKnot chain?
