View Full Version : DV->DVD: could a new VCR improve input quality ?

Hi @all

I record video using the ADVC-100 by Canopus. My problem is, that I have cable-TV, and the reception is really poor for what I want to do (Broadcast/VHS->DV->DVD). First I thought this method could never deliver good quality video at all, but then I tried the following:
I connected the S-Video out of my DVD-Player to S-Video in of my Canopus and the resulting DV-quality was great to my personal opinion (no motion in static backgrounds, exactly like it should be).

Now I think, if I had a really great input-quality, my DV-Files would have the quality I need.

Next problem: How can I increase the input quality ?

Well, now comes what I need your advice for:

I plan to buy a new VCR, the JVC HR-S8960.
Does anyone in here have any experiences with this VCR ?
It has digiPure-Technology, which claims to include a digital TBC, noise Reduction and so on.

Now, if I connect the S-Video out of this VCR to my ADVC-100 using the VCR as a source, could this possibly improve the quality and compressibility of my captured DV-files ? If so, to which degree can I expect the quality to be improved opposed to what I'm doing now (old vcr with only composite out as source) ?

Also, is the JVC HR-S8960 capable of denoising the cable TV-in at all, or does this digiPure thing only refer to S/VHS-playback ?

Your advice would be really of a help to me.

I have a JVC 9900U, I thought the 8900 series is older. In fact I think mine has been replaced too. This is the unit you want. It's digital noise filter is great as well as it's TBC. I used to use it in series to clean up off the air live feeds.

Ah, so the usage of the filter is not limited to playback from tape ?
That's good to hear, I'll give it a try then.
Thank you very much for your reply !!!
