so here is the deal...
I have a stand-alone DVD player that I want to connect using the coaxial/digital-out, to my SbIive IR Drive(with SbLive5.1 sound card)
using the spdif-in and recieve 5.1
My stand alone DVD player has 2 digital-out settings... spdif/pcm and spdif/raw. When set to pcm I recieve stereo, but when set to spdif/raw only recieve pops and clicks....
So I did a couple of tests, I borrowed a friends reciever(with AC3/DTS decoder)connected my stand alone DVD players digital-out to the spdif-in on souncard, and set to spdif bypass, then used the optical-out on my soundcard to the AC3/DTS reciever...and it decoded in 5.1
I investigated a little on my SbLive IR Drive, the specs show that spdif can only recieve PCM (20 bit, 48kHz, stereo), so I assume when the DVD player is set to spdif/pcm that it down mixes to stereo pcm, and when set to raw needs to be decoded by a AC3/DTS decoder...
I believe it is possible to do this with my sound card, even though the specs say pcm only...don't ya think if it can spdif bypass to optical(when DVD set to raw)
But need a progam to do the decoding,or to send it the needed filters, no media players have this option that i know of, also tried graph-edit..no luck

thanks

so I checked out the links, they are talking about spdif pass through
maybe you mis-understood me I want to connect my stand alone DVD to my SbLive and have it do the decoding, for audio(5.1) playback through my pc

both of those treads are about spdif pass throough, i've already achieved this with a friend's reciever, that is what leads me to believe that AC3 decoding is possible with sblive5.1 from external source
if it can decode from my pc dvd rom 5.1, or spdif passthrough(to external ac3 decoder)
then it must be able to decode from spdif-in......but need a special program to pass it through the proper filters, like ac3 filter i tried to create a graph with graph edit, but would not connect spdif-in to ac3 filter
in theory this should work
