I have a bunch of DV footage that I have caputured via fire wire to my XP computer. I am unable to Transcode any of the footage no mater what I do. I have tried serveral diffrent MPEG2 encoders as well as MS WMV9. I have tried transcoding the orginal captured footage as well as files that I have output with MS Movie Maker 2 and Ulead Video Studio. All of the DV files appear to be fine and I can edit and replicate them just fine, but as soon as I try to transcode them I get an error. Any ideas out there. This has been very frustrating. Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the forum.

You need to give us some more input.
Which programs do you use? Do you work with type-1 or type-2 DV AVIs? Do you have a DV codec installed? Did you try to use AviSynth? Did you follow the guides?

I used MS Movie Maker 2 to capture from My Canon Elura. I don't know if it saves as a type 1 or 2. I then used MS Movie Maker 2 to edit. I then tried transcoding the edited file to MPEG2. I used Ulead DVD Workshop 1 and 2 trial. I also tried TMPG trial. I then tried transcoding to wmv9. I would get various errors within the first couple of minutes of encoding. Sometimes it would show an error and say the program has to close. Sometimes it would just close on its own. I usually get an MPEG2 file that is about 1 min long. Only the first minute of my movie.
I have tried re-rendering the edited DV file with Ulead video studio. The new file is fine, but when I try to transcode to MPEG2 or wmv9, I still get the error.
I also re-formatted my C drive and reloaded XP and all video editing software. Still same result.
I am not familiar with AviSynth. What does it do? I have never used it before in the past. It is almost like the DV file is corrupted, but I can edit and play it just fine. I am also unsure if I have a DV codec installed. I have not specifically installed one, unless one of the programs I am using has installed one for me. Any insight that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have no experience with MovieMaker 2. Ulead VideoStudio should be able to convert your DV file to MPEG-2 withouth problems, though. If you need WMV9 output, you should create it from the original DV file, not the already reencoded MPEG-2 file.

There might be something wrong with your system. Did you overclock it? Do you have stability problems with other software, too? What exactly are the error messages you get?

No my system is not over clocked and is perfectly stable for all other applications. The error is :
"Ulead DVD studio has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience. Any work that you have open may be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. Click Send or don't send report"

Weird - can you capture from your camcorder using Ulead VideoStudio and transcode to MPEG-2?

I captured some new footage using Ulead DVD studio and then immediatly tried to transcode the footage to MPEG 2 again using Ulead DVD studio and still go the same error. One thing that is curios is it allways produces the first two or so minutes of the footage to MPEG2 and then I get the error. I had a 90 minute video and got through the first two minutes and this time I had a 17 minute video and still only got the first two minutes.

OK so I took my camcorder to a friends. Loaded DVD studio and get the exact same problem. This leaves me with the camcorder being the only thing in common. So my question now is why does the computer cature the video and why will ulead video studio edit and render the captured video, but I still am unable to encode the video. This is a brand new Cannon Elura. This is killing me!!!!

I have no clue what's wrong. Can you return your camcorder and get a replacement?
