View Full Version : Menus in Matroska

On the website it says that it's possible for matroska files to have menus (just like dvd's!). Does this mean that a matroska file can have all the extras off a dvd accessible via a menu? What exactly is the menu for?
With matroska it seems possible to create what is essentially a dvd-like experience: menus w/extra features, multiple audio, video angles, fast seeking, the works!

not for the moment, the menu system will be included later.

But am I correct in my assumption that it will essentially function like a dvd? Like, will there be an audio/subs selection screen, an extras section, etc?

well i assume the goal is that it will let you make a 1:1 copy of the dvd

That's what I like to hear. Thanks!

Not only. Compatibility with DVD menues was an important point, and in both directions. In principal the idea was to be able to store a complete DVD including all functions in a single MKV file, and to be able to restore the original DVD from it later.
A preliminary spec of the menue system has been uploaded since some time now to http://matroska.org/technical/menu/index.html ...

Matroska is looking better and better every time I look at it. I mean, good subtitles and everything is cool, but to make it like a dvd is pretty cool too. For me it's always been the extras that made purchasing the DVD justifiable... now backing them up will be more inclusive.
I have a question though: how can I, a fairly newb-ish character, get involved in matroska? Is there any way I can contribute?

Writing guide like or help-file like documetation is very importatn to get other users to support a format.

Is there any way I can contribute? ... our complete life is centered around our IRC channel on irc.corecodec.com #matroska. Hang around there, and see if you can stand us and our bad manners :) .... if you dont like IRC, subscribe to our MLs on http://lists.matroska.org .
Soon you will notice that there is plenty of work that almost anybody with a basic knowledge about PCs can do, and would help us a lot if being taken from our backs ..... you're most welcome, one way or the other :) !
