View Full Version : Quick way to convert .mpg to Xvid? Something like AutoGK

Hi All,

I've done a lot of vhs caps to mpeg2 using Pinnacle Studio 8.5, and I saved them as full 720x576 PAL Mpeg2 files (*.mpg).

But now, I want to convert them all to Xvid using something VERY simple like AutoGK does for DVD backups (which incidentally I use all the time to make Xvid files of my favourite DVD's, it's awesome when you can fit 6-7 good quality movies fit on a single DVD-R)

Is there a tool that allows me to just select the source file (the .mpg), select a destination folder for the Xvid *.avi file, hit start and away we go, like AutoGK?

I did find a guide for VirtualDub, but when I tried to use Xvid, it came up with all these errors and wouldn't code it, though it worked perfectly fine with DivX 3 and DivX 5, but I'm not happy with the final quality of them, which is why I want to convert them to Xvid instead, which I *AM* happy with the quality!

Any help would be great thanks!

sounds like you are having some evil codec problems. Un-install any version of xvid you have, and re-install the latest version (1.0 RC3)

Then, try doing a simple single pass encode, and work your way up to a nice 2 pass encode.

As far as an "easy" solution, I would just open the mpeg-2 file in dvd2avi (I think you can do this) and use it to frameserve just like you would with a dvd.

good luck

I'm surprised this hasn't been answered before (maybe it is in the wrong forum?) But if you want ease-of-use (as opposed to quality), the best bet is virtualdubmod.

But anyways, which errors are you encountering?

just out of curiousity, what do you mean by that? vdub mod is (as far as I know) THE program to do XviD encoding in... what else would you use???

I frameserve through avisynth, and encode it in vdub using fast recompress. But vdubmod can open mpeg-2's directly. You just do too many colour conversions, especially if you want to use filters, IIRC.
