my friend bought a DVD writer and has a 8GB VideoDVD and wants to record it onto a DVD+/-R that it's 4,7GB. i know that the bitrate lowering would help, but what's the program for this job?

Be prepared for serious loss of quality. I have found that anything above 6 gigs that gets compressed to one dvd is very poor quality and jerky. You would be better off to keep the quality and split the video to two DVD's. Just my opinion.

I have seen rarely any DVD of which main movie was much bigger then 5 GB. All these DVD's are loaded with extra's, Three kinds of sounds (DTS conusmes a lot of space), some even two versions, normal and wide screen etc.
Strip out what you don't need with for example DVDstripper (my favorite) and probably the amount of compression (if still needed) will be acceptable, furthermore you can compress the extra's more then the main movie etc etc.
Until now I did not encounter a DVD where I needed to compress main movie to a value less then 70%. (most of them where around 80%)

About 25% of the movies in my collection are larger than 5Gbs. For example, check out Apacalypse Now Redux, its about 7.8Gbs (that's movie ONLY!). I used CCE and it looks absolutely fabulous on my 10-foot wide screen... please don't try this with any transcoder... if your TV is any bigger than 21" you'll just be wasting your time.

Hi, Can you test it with QuEnc too and see if it is comparable to CCE ? I never got the chance to test a so big movie.

Use DVDStripper to strip all unwanted extras and try DVDRB with CCE (Not free) or QuEnc (Free). You can also remove unwanted streams with DVDRB. You'll gain a lot of space and you'll get a good quality backup. Good chance.
