View Full Version : How to upsample a 720x576 MPEG2 clip into 720P MPEG4 XviD?

Dear Sirs,

is there an easy way to do this: upsampling a 720x576 MPEG-2 clip into 1280x720 MPEG-4 XviD? I tried the Windows Media Encoder, which made the job with Windows Media, but how could this be doable
also with Xvid? All the guides I have seen thus far, seem to require a HDTV MPEG-2 Transport Stream on HD - if there would be an easy guide to follow or if you could post a summary of the steps, which I could follow, that would be most appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Any resizer can do it (e.g. avisynth), but i cannot see any point in it. Even if you upsample it, you wouldn't get better quality than the original, so you would just waste the bitrate. Keep the resolution and encode it anamorphically imo.

Ok, my question really relates to how to encode MPEG-2 HDTV-material into Windows Media and MPEG-4. As I do not have any HDTV MPEG-2 files at hand, I just try to do it with SDTV MPEG-2 files in order to see, how it's done. The problem with the guides I have seen on doom9's forums is that they relate to the re-encoding of a HDTV transport stream, as that is what usually a user has on his HD. I just want to see how the thing would be done by HDTV MPEG-2 -clip instead of the transport stream. I am not very familiar with AviSynth though, last time I needed it was to re-encode AVI:s recoded by WinTV into MPEG-2. I better look it up - meanwhile, if you have any further suggestions on how to do the job, please let me know.

Yours sincerely,

VirtualdubMod can accept mpeg2 as input, so if you don't need sophisticated filters, it's sufficient imo. Just open the mpeg2 clip, set the resizer filter (and deinterlacer if needed), although i'm not sure the picture aspect ratio will be correct. :)

Ok, thank you for the information! Would this method work ok also with a HDTV-clip? (e.g. 1080i MPEG-2 if I wanted to turn it into 720P Mpeg-4 via the virtualdub mod?)

I'll try the method right away then.

Have you tried Sharpresize or IIP?

Nope, haven't tried those yet. Had some troubles with VirtualDub yesterday (audio-options are missing and I get the -100 error). Will try again today.

iip is great in doing this kind of things, but is veeeery slow, so (for the moment) it's not usable for long clips or movies.

But, like suggested before, I think that encoding at 720p is a waste of bits, since you can encode anamorphically at original resolution, and resize to 720p on playback using ffdshow (which is the best solution because you can use algoritms like bicubic and lanczos which mantain the sharpness of the image) or changing the aspect ratio using the player (like Media Player Classic).

I could take a look at the IIP-software, since I am having difficulties with VirtualDub Mod. What's it's homepage?

Well ... the "homepage" of iiP is here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70916), and I tested it only with VirtualDub(Mod) so far ... ;)

teko77: first of all, make sure you have VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 as newer version are reported to be pretty bugged. Second, IIP and SharpResize (SharpTools) are avisynth scripts. Didée already told you where to find info and a download for IIP, you can find info and a download for SharpResize (SharpTools) in here:
