View Full Version : Decrypter in file mode?

I have been successfully ripping dvds to hard drive using smartripper (backup mode) for some time. I then process them with dvd2one to remove unwanted menus, audio tracks, trailers etc. I do not recompress, just remove unwanted parts and rebuild the ifo files. Usually I just want the movie stored on the drive.

Reading the documentation for decrypter, I should be able to accomplish the same result in one step with decrypter in file mode and selecting only the parts desired. However in doing this, the resulting set of files does not play correctly with WinDVD. The individual VOB files will play, but double clicking or loading the video_ts.ifo file does not work. Has worked fine using smartripper and then dvd2one but I would like to move to a one step process for most dvds. Am I doing this wrong or is there still something to be repaired in the ifo files before they can be played?

If you want reliable results, you have to select all the files when ripping in DVD Decrypter. Apparently, there was some important information or settings stored in those IFO/VOB files that you didn't rip.

Once you ripped the whole DVD, you can analyze its contents and strip the titles that you don't need.

Of course, there are other solutions if you only want to keep the main movie. For example, you can rip the largest titleset and re-create IFO files in IfoEdit. Keep in mind that you'll lose the menus and the chapter information.

This is pretty much what I had surmized. I have been ripping the entire dvd using smartripper and then removing unwanted streams etc with dvd2one. What I am finding out is that while SmartRipper and Decrypter can remove streams and only rip the title set you want, neither will build correct IFO files for the resultant VOBs. You still have to build your own IFO files. So doing it that way is still a 2 pass operation. I'll stick with the work process I have been using until decrypter gets the ability to not only parse IFO files but to build correct new ones for the streams selected.

It wont ever do that. It's decryption software, not processing software.

'Backup' mode in smartripper is just like File mode in DVD Decrypter - where you've selected all the files (done by default anyway)

Fair enough and point taken. I was not trying to insinuate that SmartRipper was in any way superior to Decrypter. Quite the opposite, I was planning to switch as SmartRipper appears to be a dead end and you just keep improving Decrypter. Probably will still switch and 'keep up with the joneses' I guess I just thought a feature was there that was not.

Thanks for the definitive answer.

I do the same, set Decrypter in Ifo mode, then thru settings set file splitting to: none and check everything.

Playback w/ PowerDVD is full 6ch and just the movie.

I haven't played much with chaptering, none of it comes thru pDVD, though from the looks of things it's all there if I need it at a later date.
Or if not, I can just re-rip it since I do own the DVDs - I like not having to dig thru piles or mess with a stupid DVD player when I want to watch something.
It's also convienient to have a to have a handy list of the DVDs I do own...
