A problem I have just run into sounds very similar to that of another thread on this forum - "Physical Problem During the Ripping Process: any solution?" But I don't see any clues as to the problem in that thread, so...

DVDDecrypter version 3.1.9.0 was run on the region 1 DVD Calle 54 using an RPC1 drive (Matshita SR-8176 flashed to LX39 firmware) under Windows XP with DVD Region Killer enabled. Decryption proceeded OK until the last VOB chain (a supplementary title). There, almost 1 gb into the first VOB of the chain, DVDDecrypter diagnosed a permanent read error. Similar errors were encountered well into each of the remaining two VOBs in the chain. The other titles on the DVD were OK.

Both SmartRipper and FairUse ran into the same problem on this DVD alhough the diagnosis of the error was not as explicit as that of DVDDecrypter. Windows Media Player 9, however, had no problem with this DVD, nor was there any on a stand-alone multi-region DVD player.

No other problem has ever arisen using this drive to play and rip DVDs of various regions. Disabling DVD Region Killer had no effect. The only thing I can think of is that there might be some specific problem with the firmware of this drive on this particular title which shows up only when ripping is attempted. These errors did not occur when the procedure was repeated with a different (RPC2) drive in the system.

Does anyone have a clue as to what might be happening here?
