I'm ripping all my TV Series Disks to a media server. I started retaining the AC3 as some of the shows have a faux 5.1 encode, like the Trek series, but the majority of the disks are Dolby 2.0. I've started trying out some using a variable bitrate of 160. THe file sizes seem to be smaller, but I'm wondering if anyone that does this has any opinions of using the MP3 vs AC3

I use these ones... ;)

- MP3... Most compatible format n' still nice for 2ch stuff (CDA) !!!

- AC3... Good for multichannel stuff n' no re-encoding needed for making DVD backup's !!!

- AAC... Nice quality also @ lower bitrates (He-AAC) n' its "future conform" (MP4) !!!

But this is a question for the Audio encoding forum anyway...
