Playing back an XviD/DivX movie directly from a modern CD-Drive does not really allow to enjoy your time. The 48-52x speeds make a lot of noise. On the other hand, is it really necessary to use such a high speed for playing back a movie? Does anybody know a way/application that would slow the CD-Drive down if necessary?

try a DVD player. they are noiseless. Or copy it first on your hard disk.

Yeah, thanks,
I heard there is even a better method: to use a DVD-disk in a standalone player.

I have tried this on my system to verify the life of CDs. The CDs used in CD drives got cracked in less time than used in DVD-Rom drives. The reason is, DVDRom drives are manufactured to view DVDs and hence there is a speed regulation mechanism. So to conclude use DVD drives to playback video discs. :D

Nero comes with a utility to set the reading speed of many drives.
@Tuning: I wouldn't know why a dvd-drive should read an avi file at a slower speed than other data files. Maybe your dvd drive is just not capable of reading cd-r at high speed :D.

That can be also true, because the max speed is only 40x. btw, CD-R drive was only 48x --> small 8x difference. :D .
PS:What my point was DVD drive has a special mechanism, which CD-ROM drive doesn't have. :)

@smiller667
This is quite an information!
Is it within the Nero toolkit or it's a separate application?
