My question is just as the topic - I want to include sub files in my Matroska encodes, but I want them to be off by default and only displayed if I choose to display them.
Is this something the container is capable of, or do I need to make a MPC feature request to gabest? :)

in DirectVobSub systray, check/uncheck "Hide Subtitles". ;)

The splitter should do this job, or am i wrong?
Your workaround doesn't really work if you want to use a remote control to navigate the player....

I read time ago the problem is in the players, that doesn't look at the flag 'default track' in the subtitles, so always are showing the first one. In MKVMerge you have to disable all 'Make default track' in subtitles and wait until someone release a player that reads this flag.

Ok, it seems that I was wrong here...uups.
Are you sure that's the player's job to see the "default" flag of subtitles?
Isn't it the job of VSFilter to read the "default" flag ?
confused again...:D

Isn't it the job of VSFilter to read the "default" flag ? ... its normally the players job, but on DirectShow, given automated playback graph creation, the filters have to care about it ....

You can create & mux a "ghost subtitles track" in SRT, tagged "Misc languages"...
