hey i got the vdub mod that lets u edit mpeg2 and heres my question

i got ati tv wonder ve and i capture in mpeg2
now i want to record a show and then cut out the commercials
in virtual dub
here's my problem
i had a test file mpeg2 a min long and it was about 8-9 mb
then i ran it in vdub and i just want to cut out the commercials and then save it as it is.

i tried to do it under direct stream copy but it says something about "video source uses a compression algorithm that is not compatible with avi files direct stream cannot be used for...."

so i tried using compression and for the most part i played around with divx 5 and xvid using the settings in the guides on doom9 and divx digest but the end files tended to be a bit bigger than the original files and the shocking thing was it lost some quality and i had cut out some of the commericials

i tried mpegcut and i like how u can save it as it is after u choose what u want to keep but i can't delete any segments of video

also i'm in a bit of a hurry so i didn't have time to search the forums to see if anyone had asked this before and i just signed up so i apologize if this has come before.

well hopefully someone can help me out

thanks

Of course if you recompress using DivX/XviD you loose quality.

As the message said you can't use direct streaming copy. Only way I know of to save out MPEG2 with VDubMod is using ffvfw as your codec and that still means recompressing.

Basically for what you want to do you need to use some different software or capture to AVI, then you can edit with VDubMod and use dscopy.

For MPEG editing you might want to try http://www.womble.com/index.shtml

You can do what you want in VDMOD, and save it in MPEG2 format. You need to download Yane plugin from Donald Graft's site. It is now in beta release. You use the highest setting for qualiiy and the loss will be much less than Divx.

For $79.95 you can get a lot more editing program from Magix.com called MEP2004
