Does dvdshrink 3.1.7 automatically writes ISO files, or does it create the image file after it's done doing its "magic"... I'm asking because I would like to know if I could start doing a dvd when I have a only 4.50 gigs available on my hard drive... thanks in advance...

yes it writes directly to .iso ....only 4.5GB required. No video files are created...only .iso.

I can't find any command or option to write ISO images in 3.1.7; how to do it?

When you click "Backup", under the "Target Device" tab, the "Select target device" combo box is at the top. You can choose between "Hard Disc Folder" and "ISO Disc Image".

I also like the new option in there that automatically launches DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO file! Now we've got a real 'on click' backup solution. I put in a DVD in my DVD-ROM drive, blank in my recorder and away it went. The only thing I had to do was verify the compression options were ok, but talk about painless! Nice work DVD Shrink!
